We are seeking an Application Scientist within the research and development group focusing on downstream technologies.  The job is located in Waltham. MA

Responsibilities include:

  • Planning and generation of applications data and protocols to support current products and new product development within the field of downstream processing of biologics, namely chromatography
  • Perform technology evaluations
  • Provide product demonstrations/ tests within customer labs
  • Work on joint technology projects with the R&D groups of partner companies and customers
  • Develop technical aspects of product seminar presentations
  • Present technical information to peers, technology partners and customers
  • Actively review and report on relevant technology publications


  • Expertise in protein purification with in-depth knowledge of chromatographic separation matrices and equipment
  • A clear understanding of techniques such as:
  • Affinity and IEX chromatography, assays formatted in 96 well plates, AKTA FPLC, HPLC, ELISA, IEF and gel electrophoresis, membrane separations TFF
  • Previous experience with statistical Design of Experiment (DoE) methodologies and software
  • Exceptional in independent analytical assessment, problem solving and decision making
  • Familiarity with GMP, GLP and ISO 9000/2001 quality systems is a plus


  • Degree in an Engineering or Scientific discipline (Biology, Biochemistry, ChemEng, BichemEng, BiomedEng)
  • PhD – 2+ years industry experience
  • BS/MS -6+ years
  • Experience: (must have separation science experience ie.. chromatography)
    • A minimum of 2+ years’ experience in the biotechnology manufacturing and/or process development with focus in chromatography technologies
  • Experienced in column chromatography and column packing
  • Knowledge or direct experience with the following techniques would be helpful:
    • Affinity and Ion-exchange chromatography, AKTA FPLC, HPLC
  • Skilled in analytical assessment and problem solving
  • Proven ability to engender cooperation at all levels across functional departments.
  • Attention to detail, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and strong organizational skills
