Associate Scientist, Process Analytical Chemistry

We are seeking an associate scientist to join our Process Analytical Chemistry team at Amyris.  The candidate analytical chemist will be responsible for assay development and sample analysis using primarily Near Infrared and other spectroscopic techniques, as well as maintenance and upkeep of laboratory equipment. The position reports to a scientist within Process Analytical Chemistry.  The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic, self-motivated, resourceful problem solver who works well independently and as part of a team.


  • Interact with the Screening and Analytics department to develop methods for small molecule characterization/quantification:
    • high-throughput assays for strain screening
    • assays to monitor product titer in fermentation broth and process streams
    • in-process assays to monitor reactions and make process decisions at scale
    • assays for product release that meet regulatory requirements
  • Evaluate and document performance of developed methods
  • Transfer high-volume or critical assays to operations groups for routine testing
  • Where required, acquire data on low-volume or non-routine samples
  • Perform set-up, modification, troubleshooting and performance tests on analytical instrumentation  and spectrophotometers to ensure acceptable performance with minimal downtime
  • Order supplies and perform laboratory housekeeping tasks
  • Prepare laboratory notebooks, technical reports, and SOPs
  • Give presentations on method performance study findings to internal audiences


  • B.S. degree in chemistry or related discipline with 5+ years experience, M.S. degree in chemistry or related discipline with 3+ years experience.
  • Hands-on development experience in selection and evaluation of measurement techniques, experimental design, sample preparation/extraction, and optimization of spectroscopic conditions for small molecule characterization/quantification
  • Experience in on-line spectroscopic technology including but not limited to NIR, Raman and UV-VIS
  • Experience in the use of statistical and chemometric techniques and software in one or more of the following is required: Unscrambler, R, python or equivalent
  • Multivariate modeling, data analysis and design-of-experiments is required
  • Experience in other analytical techniques such as gas chromatography, liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry, or titration analyses is a plus
  • High mechanical aptitude – demonstrated ability to understand, maintain, troubleshoot and repair laboratory and process analytical instruments
  • Strong problem solving ability
  • Demonstrated ability in time-management and prioritization of multiple projects and tasks
  • Demonstrated ability to write clear and concise technical documentation
  • Proficiency at presenting results and status updates at department or group meetings
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team; clear interpersonal communication ability
  • Energetic, highly self-motivated, and able to work efficiently and productively in a fast-paced R&D environment
