Position Summary

Known for its scientific and operational excellence, Regeneron is a leading science-based biopharmaceutical company that discovers, invents, develops, manufactures, and commercializes medicines for the treatment of serious medical conditions. Regeneron commercializes medicines for eye diseases, high LDL-cholesterol, atopic dermatitis and a rare inflammatory condition and has product candidates in development in other areas of high unmet medical need, including rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, pain, cancer and infectious diseases.

These positions are in Cardiovascular/Renal Diseases in Tarrytown, NY. There are 3 openings for Summer 2018. Each opening is described below.

Position 1: The student will focus on the area of blood coagulation with an emphasis on fibrinolysis (i.e., breakdown of clots). We are interested in two endogenous fibrinolytic inhibitors in the fibrinolysis pathway, so use of antagonists to either would be expected to increase the rate of fibrinolysis, thus leading to a quicker clot clearance.

The aims of the project for the student are to 1) gain an understand of the relevance of coagulation and fibrinolysis in health and disease and 2) to work closely with Research Associates to evaluate the hypothesis that inhibition of fibrinolysis inhibitors is beneficial for clot breakdown in in vitro coagulated human plasma/blood triggered by either contact activation or tissue factor activation. In addition, the student will be offered an opportunity to participate in in vivo mouse studies that evaluate how these inhibitors affect clot stability and breakdown after an induced thrombotic event. Results from this project will increase our understanding of whether prophylactic antagonism to fibrinolytic inhibitors may hold therapeutic potential in thrombophilia and stroke.

Position 2: The student will become familiar with hearing assessment in COL4A3 KO mouse model of Alport Syndrome. Patients with COL4A5 (85%, x-linked), COL4A3 and COL4A4 (15%) mutations develop kidney disease called Alport Syndrome. Majority of these patients also develop hearing loss in their lifetime. At REGN, mouse model of Alport Syndrome was developed by knocking out COL4A3 gene. The student will participate in the functional assessment of hearing as well as histopathological characterization of inner ear in this model. The student will also get a chance to get familiarize with the disease biology/pathology of Alport Syndrome as a part of the training. The student, along with a trained Research Associate, will be involved in development of methods, data analysis, documentation and presentation of the findings.

Position 3: The student will work closely with Research Associates to probe cardiovascular biology in vivo and in vitro. In vivo pharmacology and/or surgical models of disease combined with ultrasound assessment of cardiovascular function will be the focus of this project. Human iPSC-derived cardiomyocytes will be utilized for in vitro experimentation. Additional tools and techniques utilized during the course of this project will include an impedance/field potential system, calcium flux assessment, gene expression and western blotting.
