Position Summary

Known for its scientific and operational excellence, Regeneron is a leading science-based biopharmaceutical company that discovers, invents, develops, manufactures, and commercializes medicines for the treatment of serious medical conditions. Regeneron commercializes medicines for eye diseases, high LDL-cholesterol, atopic dermatitis and a rare inflammatory condition and has product candidates in development in other areas of high unmet medical need, including rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, pain, cancer and infectious diseases.

These positions are in Inflammatory & Immune Diseases in Tarrytown, NY. There are 2 openings for Summer 2018. Each opening is described below.

Position 1: The student will perform ongoing research on allergy and autoimmune diseases, as part of the Inflammation and Immunity department. As part of this group, the student will perform in vitro screening cell-based assays using human cells to assessing efficacy of therapeutic candidate molecules. The project involves performing cell culture and stimulation, ELISA/MSD and Flow Cytometry. The student will also participate in in vivo experiments with the group (collection and processing of mouse tissue samples).

Position 2: The student will:
• Prepare and optimize protocol to expand tumor reactive T cells from syngeneic tumor bearing mice to investigate the anti-cancer response
• Prepare and optimize normal B cell and T cell activation protocols from various donor sources to investigate the expression of surface markers using flow cytometry.
• Prepare and optimize protocols to investigate the intracellular signaling of immune suppressive agents as bioassays.

Position 3: Single nucleotide polymorphisms of gene A have been associated with intestinal inflammation, colon tumorigenesis and certain autoimmune diseases. In in vitro stimulation assays, gene A has been suggested to function as a negative regulator of T cell proliferation and activation. Similar family members have been recently shown to shape local intestinal T cell compartments in order to promote normal gut development and tissue integrity during intestinal dysbiosis. In-house generated reporter mice showed strong expression of gene A in intestinal epithelial cells. In addition, our preliminary studies identified an altered intraepithelial T cell compartment in the small intestine of gene A-deficient mice. These observations suggest a potential role for gene A in mediating the interplay between intestinal epithelial cells and immune cells.

The student will work on a project focusing on exploring the contribution of gene A to intraepithelial immune system development and function in the presence and absence of disease. Techniques that will be used include flow cytometry, quantitative real-time PCR and cytokine measurement assays.
