The AbbVie Experiential Internship Program
As an AbbVie Experiential Intern, you'll participate in a paid, ten to twelve-week summer program that is focused on providing students with robust projects throughout the summer. As an intern, you will be located at our corporate headquarters in north suburban Chicago, with housing and shuttle services for eligible students.
Department Overview - Discovery Chemistry and Technology
DCaT is a multidisciplinary department with a major emphasis on employing chemistry to drive forward AbbVie's drug discovery portfolio. Within DCaT, part of the medicinal chemistry technologies organization, is the Fragment-Based Drug Discovery Group. This group synthesizes and uses very small chemical entities (fragments) to probe protein targets in an attempt to ‘drug' the proteins and offer a potential path forward to develop new drugs for AbbVie. The intern will work within the FBDD group on a project designed to provide the candidate with an appreciation of the challenges and nuances of drug discovery.
Assignment Details
Work in the fragment Based Drug Discovery Group - The internship will focus on developing synthetic organic methodology to prepare novel bespoke fragments for the AbbVie Fragment Screening Collection. The intern will work with scientists in the fragment based drug discovery group to learn the processes that underpin drug discovery and the importance of the role of FBDD in this regard. The intern will work in state of the art facilities for both synthetic organic chemistry and drug design. As part of the training program the intern will work with multiple teams within AbbVie to give an appreciation of the whole process of Drug Discovery. After 12 weeks the intern will have enough material to give either a poster or oral presentation to the broader organization and also to publish in a well-respected scientific journal.
