Your tasks and responsibilities

The primary responsibilities of this role, Senior Scientist - Crop Genetics, are to:

  • In close interaction with global and regional heads of Marker Assisted Breeding (MAB), lead the development and implementation of molecular markers in vegetable crops (e.g. melon, onion);
  • Design, plan and conduct MAB projects in assigned crops in close interaction with crop's Research and Development (R&D) colleagues;
  • Active participation in the global R&D crop teams (of assigned crops) in the tactical discussions of plans to execute short-term and long-term strategies of the crops;
  • Ensure that MAB project portfolio is well aligned with R&D Crop Team Leader;
  • In close collaboration with the Pre-Breeders, develop and implement plans to identify unique genetic variations in natural genetic resources for breeding improvement;
  • In partnership with breeders and through exchange of knowledge and ideas, propose and apply innovative breeding techniques, schemes and tools to improve breeding efficiency and genetic gain;
  • Initiate and execute project plans for the identification of quantitative trait loci (QTL) underlying complex traits in assigned vegetable crops in collaboration with breeders, ensure the application of identified QTL markers in the development of superior hybrids;
  • Propose and implement new ideas on integration of genome-wide marker technologies for accelerated breeding of assigned crops.
  • Be the contact person with universities, institutes and third party companies to keep up-to-date with the latest developments in molecular breeding and to get access to specific algorithms and software tools;
  • Work closely with the other MAB Scientists to identify and prioritize opportunities for improvement in integrated breeding.

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD in Genetics, Plant Breeding or related fields with a minimum of four years of relevant experience or;
  • MS in Genetics, Plant Breeding or related fields with a minimum of eight years of relevant experience or;
  • BS in Genetics, Plant Breeding or related fields with a minimum of ten years of relevant experience or;
  • Experience with managing a research team with at least three years of management experience;
  • Excellent project management skills - managing multiple projects with multiple stakeholders;
  • Thorough understanding of statistics and quantitative genetics;
  • Demonstrated extensive knowledge of Plant Breeding with related field experience;
  • Basic knowledge of Bio-informatics;
  • Effective networker with academic scientists of various disciplines;
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Pragmatic mind-set;
  • Must be a team player and be able to work collaboratively;
  • Ability and willingness to work internationally (travel approximately 10%).
