Your tasks and responsibilities

The primary responsibilities of this role, Director Health Safety and Environment Security, are to:

  • Direct all activities in the areas of Environmental Controls and Safety for the Bayer Healthcare West Coast Sites. Develop, implement, administer, and monitor the HES management systems and programs. Advises senior management teams on current requirements and obligations;
  • Develop, implement, track, report and continuously improve the Environmental and Safety standards, procedures, and practices to assure regulatory compliance as well as conformance with Bayer's internal requirements; engages in the conduct of HESS audits and makes recommendations to assure compliance;
  • Lead and coordinate Bayer's Plant & Process Safety initiative for the BHC West Coast sites;
  • Lead the Bayer Berkeley Safety Council and supports an active HES network and best practice sharing within Bayer's NA sites and BHC's global HES Platform;
  • Lead the Berkeley Emergency Response Team and coordinates the Emergency Response Programs for the BHC West Coast Sites;
  • Interact with regulatory agencies, the City of Berkeley, and Bayer's HES Platform functions regarding all HES issues and activities including the required reporting;
  • Oversee the West Coast Security and Occupational Health functions;
  • Provide effective leadership including: development and implementing objectives and business strategies; select key personnel and motivating members of the functional area; challenge employees to develop as leaders while serving as a role model and mentor; assist with Performance Calibration/Talent Pool Management/Succession Planning; individual goal setting and performance reviews; training and development; support workforce diversity, quality and safety, and supporting supervisors and managers in management of their employees/department which support achievement of individual/department/business objectives.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree;
  • Ten years' experience in the health, environment, or safety field working in a regulated environment, five years in management or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Broad based experience in the areas of chemicals, process and plant safety, environmental controls, occupational safety and industrial hygiene, radiation, and hazardous waste management;
  • In-depth knowledge of state, federal and local health, environment and safety laws;
  • Experience in application and execution of systematic safety analysis tools (i.e. HAZOP) and management systems aimed at environmental and safety improvement;
  • Exhibits good process management skills by knowing how to use existing systems and utilizing opportunities for synergy and integration;
  • Excellent interpersonal savvy relating well to a diverse population of employees at all levels of the organization and building appropriate rapport and constructive relationships;
  • Ability to partner with, challenge, and influence Senior Management.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of cGMP regulations and cGLP regulations for the pharmaceutical industry.
