Your tasks and responsibilities

The primary responsibilities of this role, Director of Communications, Pharmaceuticals, are to:

  • Provide strategic communications support to the leadership of the therapeutic areas in the U.S. pharmaceutical business; With business unit (BU) leadership, set PR strategy for product communication in these categories and interface with region/country leaders and global communications colleagues to align as appropriate with global plans;
  • Manage interface with PR agencies for the BUs;
  • Provide guidance/leadership for the U.S. pharmaceutical product communications team;
  • Build and develop the product communications team with other senior U.S. communications leaders to align with the Communications, Government Relations, and Policy organization; the global pharmaceutical communications team; and other teams across the U.S. pharmaceutical business;
  • Work seamlessly with senior leadership to provide external & internal communications counsel regarding proactive and reactive product issues and other related topics;
  • Develop long term strategic public relations programs for all key products and therapeutic areas marketed in the US, working with business unit professionals to ensure alignment of communications goals with business goals; This includes new product launches, new indications, disease awareness programs, ongoing media relations initiatives, etc.;
  • Develop, with the product communications team, strong, concise and coherent messages, statements, press releases and other PR materials on a wide range of topics, issues and programs related to the pharmaceutical business;
  • Develop/evolve, as needed, new policies and operating procedures for the U.S. pharma communications organization that will allow for greater efficiency and productivity;
  • Work closely with Bayer's head of U.S. internal communications to ensure that all external and internal activities are well coordinated and synergistic;
  • Direct educational efforts within U.S. organization that will allow employees to become better informed about Bayer's business and products;
  • Identify and direct appropriate activities to enhance the visibility of the president of U.S. pharmaceuticals division and other senior executives in the U.S. pharma organization;
  • Coordinate closely with the U.S. advocacy relations team to develop and build partnership opportunities for the product portfolio with key third party groups and opinion leaders including patient advocacy groups, healthcare providers, etc.;
  • Interface with marketing, medical affairs, regulatory, legal and Government Relations & Policy and others to assure seamless and integrated programs;
  • Develop and foster relationships with key reporters on behalf of Bayer and instill this approach across the professionals working in external product communications;
  • Provide relevant training for staff and help team develop strategy and identify reporters critical to our business;
  • Identify, consolidate and evaluate all public relations agencies, consultants and other vendors working on behalf of product communications programs.

Required Qualifications:
  • BA or BS degree with at least 15+ years overall Communications experience;
  • Previous experience of the Pharmaceutical and Healthcare arena;
  • Current, up-to-date knowledge of the issues affecting the industry;
  • Experience in the development and implementation of communications and media strategies;
  • A combination of agency and corporate experience;
  • Experience working with both U.S. and global businesses;
  • Strong leadership and strategic abilities and experience including staff selection, supervision and development;
  • Good financial skills as they relate to managing substantial budgets;
  • Incumbent must be detail oriented and able to independently handle multiple priorities, working in a highly matrixed organization;
  • Ability to work across many layers and levels of the organization;
  • A positive, collaborative and team-oriented approach.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • A graduate degree in Communications or Healthcare related field.
