The Global Protein Sciences (GPS) Group is seeking a highly motivated Senior Scientist to join its Expression and Scale-up team in Worcester, MA. GPS works collaboratively with drug discovery teams to advance the AbbVie Biologics pipeline. As an integral member of the group the candidate will be responsible for design, expression and scale-up of recombinant proteins that meet project objectives. She/he will investigate, develop, and optimize new methods/techniques with hands-on laboratory work and literature review. The candidate will also have an opportunity to contribute to internal technology platforms with creative protein engineering for novel functions, expression technology improvements or innovative cellular assay design.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Actively contribute in protein expression activities including expression optimization & screening from bench-scale to scale-up to Wave Bioreactor.
  • Work collaboratively in a matrix environment with project team members and members of the Biologics Group to drive innovation and deliver novel therapies to our patients.
  • Stays current with applicable internal/external scientific literature and apply new information to successfully complete work assignments.
  • Exhibit great work ethic and maintain a high level of productivity in the laboratory.
  • Effectively organize and communicate research progress and planned activities through oral and written presentations.
  • BS, MS or PhD (Molecular/Cell biology or related field) with 10+ (BS), 8+ (MS), 0+ (PhD) years of experience
  • Candidate must possess strong molecular biology skills (clone design, synthesis, and characterization)
  • Applicant is proficient in mammalian (HEK,CHO), insect/baculovirus and E.coli expression
  • Experience working with automated laboratory workflows and instrumentation
  • Experience engineering proteins for specific functional goals and study of signaling and membrane trafficking are desirable
  • Experience in FACS, cell engineering expertise (e.g. lentiviral transduction, inducible expression systems, gene editing, CRISPR) a big plus.
