Position: Veterinary Sciences Technical Coordinator
Location: Redwood City, CA

We are seeking a Technical Coordinator to join the Veterinary Sciences team. As such you will experience a culture that believes in making the animal care and use program a model for the industry. Position Responsibilities:
• Coordinates and performs routine and some non-routine work required for the care of laboratory animals.
• Regularly assists in providing health care for laboratory animals and restraint of animals for veterinary staff and research personnel.
• Identifies and works with supervisors and co-workers to implement changes which may improve animal welfare and productivity.
• Provides proper feed and clean caging to laboratory animals and checks drinking water system in assigned areas/rooms daily.
• Accurately and consistently completes room logs, other forms, and records applicable to position on prescribed schedule.
• Assesses the health of animals on a daily basis and reports any issues to the veterinary staff.
• Monitors environmental parameters, condition of animal rooms and equipment in rooms, and proper functioning of mechanical systems (e.g., HVAC, lighting, automatic drinking water system) in assigned areas daily.
• Operates and/or coordinates the operation of cage washers, autoclaves, and other equipment as assigned.
• Regularly initiates and performs minor equipment repair and maintenance tasks.
• Initiates work orders for facility issues and may coordinate preventative maintenance and equipment repairs.
• Participates in coordinating new employee training.
• Consistently completes ongoing training and education programs as required.
• Additional specific responsibilities as they pertain to the area of assignment may include, but are not limited to, carrying out critical phases of various procedures such as rodent breeding, biological sample collection, data collection for routine operations, conducting environmental and/or biological testing, scheduling/performing duties that involve animal health maintenance and monthly census.
• Participates in facility projects and may serve as leader or co-leader of VS teams (on-site and cross-site).
• May communicate and coordinate activities across different areas within VS.
• Follows operational procedures in the performance of daily tasks, and works cooperatively with others in VS and across functions to achieve individual, department and divisional goals.
• Suggests and evaluates changes in forms, methods, and procedures, as appropriate to enhance efficiency, productivity, and animal welfare.
• Assists in coordinating schedules of animal care activities on weekends and holidays to include caging and equipment requirements for assigned area(s).
• Tracks inventory and reports supply needs to appropriate personnel. Receives, stores, and distributes items according to SOPs.
Competencies - Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
• Individual will have demonstrated ability to understand and consistently follow SOPs and should have demonstrated ability to consistently perform tasks with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
• Individual must have demonstrated the ability to consistently follow directions, communicate effectively, and work well in a team environment. Individual must have demonstrated leadership capabilities.
• Individual will have demonstrated the physical stamina and dexterity needed to handle laboratory animals, including species that may be difficult to work with, and the use of personal protective equipment.
• Has a history of consistent high level performance in meeting objectives and consistent high level performance in Biopharma behaviors.
• Proficient in computer applications and mobile devices used by VS and shown an interest in training others in their use.
Experience - Responsibility and minimum number of years:
• Individual must 5-6 years of relevant experience in laboratory animal science.
• Makes decisions as they pertain to area(s) of the vivarium to ensure a high level of compliance with regulations, guidelines and SOPs.
• Gathers and analyzes information prior to making recommendations to supervisor and senior VS husbandry staff.
• Receives and asks for frequent guidance and feedback on performance. Provides regular feedback to co-workers and supervisors.
• Coordinates weekends and holiday schedules as well as equipment repairs and preventive maintenance.
• Individual must have an Associates of Science (AS) degree. An exception to the degree can be made for an individual who has relevant equivalent experience in the field.
• Bachelors of Science (BS) degree in a life sciences field of study is preferred.
• Individual must have AALAS certification at the Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) level. Individuals who possess appropriate experience, but do not have required AALAS certification, must obtain LATG certification within 6 months of employment.
