The person will supervise a staff of 6 Ph.Ds and RAs for the generation of world class therapeutic antibodies using the BMS human Ig tg mice to all targets identified by the eDWGs, as well as generate therapeutic antibodies to pre-DP1 exploratory projects, as well as in support of all therapeutic projects from all TAAs in BMS, including BAS and TM. This includes procurement of the appropriate strains of mice, rats, hamsters and or rabbits, needed to achieve the specific antibody goals. It also means identifying the most appropriate immunogen, in close collaboration with the eDWG leader and the responsible Protein Engineering scientist. It includes designing the optimal immunization strategy to obtain the needed antibodies. It means identifying the optimal response capture/immortalization strategy. It means identifying the optimal cloning and expression strategy, for the projects, as well as management of all the necessary functions and platform teams to generate the broadest selection and highest quality antibodies for each of these projects.
The Biologics Lead Discovery group at BMS, is one of the worlds most accomplished when it comes to generating world class therapeutic human monoclonal antibodies from human Ig transgenic mice. Examples are Yervoy, Opdivo and Darzalex, and over 25 antibodies in clinical trials in cancer, autoimmunity and metabolic diseases. We are looking for a highly experienced and capable Ph.D. scientist to take over and run a new team within the Biologics Lead Discovery department at BMS. The position is at the Associate Director or Director level. The successful candidate will be responsible for antibody lead generation for multiple therapeutic projects and for developing new and novel approaches to antibody lead generation. The successful applicant will have 10-20 years of experience in academia or in Biotech/Pharmaceutical industry, focused on antibody induction to defined targets, Ab capture through somatic or genetic means, and antibody analysis and expression. Experience with B cell cloning and hybridoma technologies is essential. Hands on work with B cell maturation, Ab gene manipulations and Ab sequence analysis are significant plusses.
The Antibody generation department exists in a matrix organization, that includes project teams from multiple therapeutic areas, from multiple physical locations, as well as many functional support groups, like Protein Chemistry, Protein engineering, Transgenic Modeling, Automation and IT. We are the primary source of antibody generation for all company therapeutic and reagent needs. The successful candidate will have to function in this matric, but can also draw from the resources within this matrix.

To do this, we have significant collaborative development initiatives ongoing in all scientific and process areas with significant impact on our ability to deliver antibodies to an increasingly diverse target selection with an increasing diversity of robust antibodies, faster. These areas include immunization enhancements, target production and purification at the highest levels of integrity possible with a focus on membrane multi-spanners, new human Ig tg mice, new response capture technology, world class automation etc. etc. It is expected that the successful candidate both will adopt new and transformative approaches/protocols/technologies, as well as identify his/her own areas of development, and develop and implement these.
The candidate will lead a group that consist of 2 Ph.D.s and 4 RAs, and report into the head of the department (9 PhD. 16 MS and BS).
Great leadership, strong decision making skills, and excellent collaborative spirit is expected for this function.
