We have an opportunity for a Principal Controls Engineer to join our team at our pharmaceutical manufacturing plant, located in North Chicago, Illinois. In this role, you will complete professional engineering assignments related to automated process controllers and develop procedures and standards. You will also be responsible for administering the IT systems which are specific to the NC Fermentation business unit, which include OSIsoft PI, LogMate and system administration tasks on other servers used in fermentation in cooperation with local campus computer administrators. The successful candidate will support the implementation of small projects as the sole resource for computer software, coordinate the activities of other technical resources, and apply innovative engineering theories, concepts and techniques while complying with regulations. Key Responsibilities Include:
  • Provide technical support for process controls automation systems such as Delta V, Provox, D3, PLCs and support communication and data platforms such as OSIsoft PI, LogMate, etc.
  • Exchange information with project team members, designers, technicians, and manufacturing personnel. Deliver recommendations and suggestions to project team members and management.
  • Develop system functional specifications from general user requirements, contributing to user requirements through experience.
  • Develop computer software code that executes the system functional specification.
  • Develop and execute validation protocols.
  • Provide technical assistance to manufacturing personnel relating to the system functional specification and user requirements. Influencing user requirements through experience and interpretation of requirements outside of computer software, for example safety and quality policy.
  • Independently troubleshoot performance problems and execute computer software solutions without supervision.
  • Provide training to manufacturing teams on OSIsoft PI, LogMate and other IT-based systems.
  • Administer user authorization to OSIsoft PI, LogMate and other IT-based systems
  • Establish standard practices for new requirements within the department.
  • May represent the Department or Business Unit within area of expertise.
  • Review and approve related inputs such as computer software, ensuring compliance to programming standards.
  • Cooperating with Corporate BPS (IT) groups to ensure required Virus Scanning and Cyber security needs are addressed appropriately on all Fermentation systems,
  • Responsible for completing objectives within time and budget constraints.
  • Receive minimal direction and exercises discretion as to work details.
  • BS in Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent technical experience plus demonstrated competence with 5 years of significant engineering and/or operational experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with OSIsoft PI, control systems and system administration.
  • Technical background working within a regulated environment, e.g. pharmaceutical, health care, nutritional products or similar industries with background in cGMP's.
  • Tactical experience in instrumentation and controls field is desirable.
  • Progressive technical experience.
