The Pre-formulation Group is an integral part of the Drug Product Development Organization. The primary function of the Pre-formulation Group is to evaluate the properties of biological drug candidates designed for specific therapeutic targets and to promote the appropriate candidates with the highest likelihood of success into full CMC development. We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Scientist based in Worcester, MA reporting to a Principal Research Scientist.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Independently identifies and conducts experiments to evaluate physicochemical properties of new biologic entities (antibodies, bispecific antibodies, antibody drug conjugates, fusion proteins) to identify any liabilities that could impact drug substance and drug product development. Demonstrates a thorough understanding of protein biophysical stability in solution.
  • Routinely performs protein characterization using chromatographic, spectroscopic, light scattering, and thermal analytic methods. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience with a broad range of LC methods (SEC, CEX, HIC, semi-prep), AUC, DSC, UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy, vibrational spectroscopy, MALS, DLS, charge measurement. Must be willing and able to learn new technologies.
  • Understands the basic elements of rational formulation design and factors that affect the stability of proteins in solution.
  • Manages assigned projects with clients from various discovery and development functions with an emphasis on quality and with a sense of urgency.
  • Capable of experimental design and data interpretation techniques such as Design of Experiments (DoE) and statistical data evaluation techniques.
  • Generates accurate, reliable data by following good scientific practices as well as internal protocols. Document and report results by using electronic systems, writing scientific reports and presentations to project teams and line functions. Reliable documentation skills are essential for this position.
  • Takes initiative to develop independent research ideas and pursues scientific questions that may arise during preformulation studies. Presents data at internal and external professional conferences and prepares manuscripts for publication in peer reviewed journals or patent applications. Supports and contributes to ongoing independent research projects in the Preformulations Group.
Qualifications Basic:
  • BS, MS, or PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry (Biophysics) or equivalent with at least 10+ (BS), 8+ (MS), or 0+ (Ph.D) years of industry or combined academic and industry experience.
  • In-depth knowledge and experience with preformulation techniques necessary for the evaluation of physicochemical properties of new biological entities.
  • Computational chemistry and structural modeling skills are a plus.
  • Knowledge or ability to become proficient with LC systems (CEX, SEC, HIC) is essential.
  • Practical experience or a desire to learn analytical high throughput screening is a plus.
  • Due to close interactions with multiplepartner functions such as biologics drug discovery, drug product formulation and drug substance manufacturing, excellent communication skills are essential.
  • The ideal candidate must be proficient with technical writing of internal reports summarizing preformulation experiments.
Key Leadership Competencies:
  • Builds strong relationships with peers and cross functionally with partners outside of team to enable higher performance
  • Learns fast, grasps the "essence" and can change course quickly where indicated
  • Raises the bar and is never satisfied with the status quo
  • Creates a learning environment, open to suggestions and experimentation for improvement
  • Embraces the ideas of others, nurtures innovation and manages innovation to reality
