Position Summary

Known for its scientific and operational excellence, Regeneron is a leading science-based biopharmaceutical company that discovers, invents, develops, manufactures, and commercializes medicines for the treatment of serious medical conditions. Regeneron commercializes medicines for eye diseases, high LDL-cholesterol, atopic dermatitis and a rare inflammatory condition and has product candidates in development in other areas of high unmet medical need, including rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, pain, cancer and infectious diseases.

These positions are in Oncology and Angiogenesis in Tarrytown, NY. There are 2 openings for Summer 2018. Each opening is described below.

Position 1: The Stem Cell Signaling group in the Oncology/Angiogenesis Department investigates stem cell signaling pathways in normal tissues and how they are co-opted or misregulated in tumors. We use in vivo, in vitro, and ex vivo models to study the physiology and pathophysiology of tissues, with our current focus on liver and colon. The student will be testing the signaling function of a member of the FIbroblast Growth Factor (FGF) family including the mouse homolog and various mutants to understand the signaling mechanism. This project will include mammalian cell culture, transfection of expression constructs into human and mouse cell lines, Western Blotting, and growth assays. An interest in structural biology and familiarity with software for visualization of protein structures would be a plus, to understand how mutations may impact protein-protein interactions.

Position 2: Cancer development requires growth of tumor cells, but also strongly depends on various other cell types present in the tumor mass. For example, blood vessels are required to provide the tumor mass with nutrients and remove waste. In addition, other cell types are involved in tumor growth and in response to various treatments. We study the role of different molecules involved in different aspects of tumor growth. The student will work on a project that includes detection and analysis of various cell populations, such as inflammatory cells or blood vessels in tumor tissue sections as well as performing in vitro assays. Altogether, this project involves independent bench, microscope and computer work, after an appropriate training period.
