Position Summary

The Regeneron Genetics Center (RGC) is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Company, whose goals are to apply large scale human genetics to identify new drug targets and to guide the development of therapeutics programs and precision medicine. Building upon Regeneron's strengths in mouse genetics and genetics-driven drug discovery and development, the RGC specializes in ultra-high-throughput exome sequencing, large scale informatics and data analysis encompassing genomics and electronic health records, and translating genetic discoveries into new biology and drug discovery opportunities. The RGC leverages multiple approaches including large population based studies, Mendelian genetics and family based studies, founder population genetics, and large-scale disease focused projects and has developed a network of over 50 collaborations with research organizations around the world. Including some of the largest sequencing studies in the world, such as the DiscovEHR study in collaboration with Geisinger Health System, and an initiative to sequence 500,000 participants with the UK Biobank, the RGC has built one of the largest human genetics databases, including sequence data from over several hundred thousand participants and rapidly growing. Our interests encompass a breadth of different areas across all therapeutic areas and the RGC is highly integrated into all facets of research and development at Regeneron. Program goals include target discovery, indication discovery, and patient-disease stratification. Objectives include advancing basic science around the world through public sharing of discoveries, providing clinically-valuable insights to physicians and providers of collaborating health-care systems, improving patient outcomes, and identifying novel targets for drug development.

Seeking individuals with strong quantitative skills to join a team of outstanding investigators to develop analytical approaches, pipelines, and conduct analyses involving genetic data in founder populations. The overall mission of the Regeneron Genetics Center is to drive and leverage genomic discoveries as therapeutic targets. As part of that mission, we have developed a portfolio of samples from a variety of founder and special populations with unique opportunities for variant discovery and interpretation in the context of rich data from outbred populations.

Responsibilities will include analyzing genome-wide genetic data from worldwide populations to characterize genetic diversity, genotype/phenotype associations, and interpreting results in the context of large-scale genetic epidemiology projects. Strong quantitative background and experience with regression models of genetic data, including coursework in statistics, is preferred. Competency scripting and programming in Perl/Python in Linux or other high performance computing environment is essential. Working knowledge of foundational population genetic concepts is desired. Level commensurate with experience.

The position will require coordination and collaboration with other scientists within the department, research and clinical scientists at Regeneron, and will provide exciting opportunities to collaborate with industry and academic investigators. The RGC hosts a vast amount of data encompassing thousands of phenotypes derived from electronic medical records, integrated with genomic data. Together, these represent a landmark collection of information that will move precision medicine and novel therapeutic discovery forward as a new data-driven paradigm in healthcare.

- Work within a team of scientists, programmers, database administrators, and clinical scientists, as well as external collaborators to analyze genetic and phenotype data from multiple and diverse population based studies.
- Conduct data analysis and develop sound approaches for population genetic analysis, including quality control, to identify genetic variants which may be unique to specific populations and may influence clinical and biomedical traits.
- Collaborate with other team members to summarize and visualize the performance of novel statistical approaches, and develop population and statistical genetics pipelines.
- Coordinate with external collaborators and bioinformatics teams in mining genetic data from diverse populations.
- Execute analyses in a timely, rigorous and reproducible manner.
- Communicate findings clearly to specialists and non-specialists, and document work for training and replication purposes.
- Assist in manuscript preparation, and contribute to the scientific community

- Masters Degree with relevant experience in Biostatistics/Statistics, Genetics, Bioinformatics, Ecology and Evolution, or related data science field.
- Minimum of two years of hands on experience with statistical data analysis.
- Level commensurate with experience.

Experience with manipulation and analysis of genome-wide genetic data sets is preferred. Additional qualifications include:
- Proficiency in principles and practice of analysis and in major statistical computing packages and languages; fluency with R, Perl/Python in a Linux environment is essential.
- Working knowledge of population genetic concepts including population structure, identity by descent, inbreeding, and linkage disequilibrium.
- Experience with genetic epidemiology approaches for genome wide association scans and/or rare variants tests.
- Familiarity with Next Generation Sequencing analysis, alignment, and variant calling is beneficial, but not required.
- Ability to multitask and manage simultaneous projects to meet deadlines with a strong attention to detail.
- Ability to interpret and communicate analytical results in a clear, concise manner, orally and in writing.
- Enthusiasm for collaborative science, and a motivation to contribute to work that will directly impact people and disease treatment.
