Research Associate – Enzymology/Protein Science

We are looking for an experienced, collaborative and results-oriented individual to support development of protein reagents, new enzymatic activities and formulations in our Molecular Biology department.

The ideal candidate will have a proven track-record of expressing, purifying and characterizing enzymes and other protein reagents for use in complex molecular biology workflows, such as next generation sequencing. He/she should be driven by making great products and enjoy working in a truly multi-disciplinary environment. This position will interact closely with colleagues in molecular biology, chemistry, process development and manufacturing. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist identification and development of novel or optimized enzymes or other protein reagents for use in the 10x Genomics technology platform and assays
  • Perform protein expression, purification and characterization
  • Perform systematic protein reagent optimization by screening or directed evolution
  • Execute and record well thought-out experiments, perform in-depth analysis and report results to stakeholders
  • Develop a deep understanding of the interplay between biochemistry and biology for assay optimization
  • Assist and contribute enzymology, protein engineering and general protein science expertise to cross-functional product and process development teams

Required Skills and Background

  • B.S. in biochemistry, protein science, molecular biology, or a similar field with a minimum of 2 years post-graduate experience in academia and/or industry
  • Extensive experience in protein expression using cell-free, bacterial, yeast, insect and/or mammalian expression systems
  • Experience in protein purification using chromatography, gel electrophoresis and related methods
  • Experience in protein characterization using spectrometry, interaction assays and functional assays
  • Experience with a wide-variety of molecular biology methods for nucleic acid analysis and manipulation, including DNA and RNA purification, amplification, qPCR and/or ddPCR
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and quickly changing environment
  • A strong desire to build game-changing technologies and impact the world of life science research

Desired Skills and Background

  • Experience with laboratory automation and liquid handlers
  • Experience with enzyme engineering using high-throughput screening and/or directed evolution
  • Experience with synthetic biology and high-throughput DNA synthesis
  • Experience with next-generation sequencing (NGS) workflows
