AbbVie Discovery is seeking a highly skilled and motivated scientist to join the chemical biology group in Discovery Chemistry and Technologies (DCAT) organization. DCAT develops and applies new technologies for elucidation of biological, disease-specific questions. The candidate will work in a multi-disciplinary team focusing on addressing challenges associated with the identification and validation of novel therapeutic targets. The successful candidate will have a broad background in the chemical and biological sciences, and strong hands-on laboratory skills. Familiarity with chemical biology methods and proteomics sciences is a strong plus. The candidate is expected to generate new research and develop strategies to ensure team deliverables. The candidate will collaborate with functional and technical experts to facilitate scientific achievement.
Key responsibilities include:
  • Design and apply biorthogonal chemistry/small molecule probe-based strategies that address specific needs of the project team/research.
  • Apply chemical proteomic approaches (affinity profiling, activity-based proteomics and other) to enable elucidation and validation of biological targets including binding site identification, off-target understanding and assessment of post-translational modifications.
  • Develop strategies to demonstrate target engagement in vitro and in vivo models.
  • Process, interpret, and visualize data to facilitate project team decisions.
  • Maintain a high level of productivity in the laboratory setting.

Position accountability and Scope:
  • An ability to work independently and effectively in a matrix environment, coupled with a “can-do” attitude to move projects forward.
  • An ability to build effective partnerships with allied functions (Molecular Probes, Structural Biology, Structural Chemistry, Target Enabling Science and Technology, Disease Area Biology teams).
  • An ability to rigorously analyze large datasets and strong organizational/record keeping skills.
  • Regularly present and publish work in in high-impact factor peer-review journals and conferences.

  • BS, MS or PhD in Organic Chemistry, Chemical Biology or closely related life science discipline with 10+ (BS), 8+ (MS) or 0+ (PhD) years of job-related experience.
  • Highly skilled laboratory experimentalist with experience of working with biological systems (cells/cell lysates/ex vivo tissues etc.) and a desire to continue in a laboratory-focused role with a high level of experimental vigor and quality.
  • Postdoctoral experience either in an academic or industrial setting.
  • Familiarity with following technologies: bioorthogonal chemistry; site-selective protein modification; photoaffinity cross-linking; affinity enrichment; cellular imaging; target identification; target engagement methods; proteomics.
  • High attention to detail, creativity in problem-solving, strong interpersonal skills and proven ability to successfully work independently and as part of teams.
  • Impactful research experience demonstrated by high quality publications, patents and/or presentations at national/international conferences.
