Provides support in maintaining the facilities' environmental and occupational health and safety programs. Monitors environmental compliance and occupational health and safety programs (chemical safety, radiation safety, ergonomics, illness and injury prevention). Maintains safety equipment inventory and performs periodic safety inspections. Recommends corrective action where environment health and safety hazards exist. May develop, revise, and deliver EHS training modules. May conduct periodic inspections of lab and other work areas to ensure compliance with Cal-OSHA. May assist with exposure assessments. This job contributes to and supports the company’s research and development efforts to create high value therapeutics to address unmet medical needs.

Responsibilities:
Works on problems of diverse scope in which analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors. Exercises judgment within generally defined practices and policies in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Normally receives no instruction on routine work and general instructions on new assignments. Participates in the evaluation of new equipment and raw materials for safety. Participates on the Emergency Response Team (ERT). Assists with the maintenance of EH&S monitoring equipment. Assists with the maintenance of the Safety Data Sheet online system. Assists in maintaining EH&S records. Assists with the maintenance of the chemical inventory. Assists in the implementation of EH&S programs. Assists with the development of EH&S policies, programs and procedures.

Requirements:
A Bachelors/Masters degree in environmental studies, health and safety, industrial hygiene or related science/technical discipline is required. Equivalent experience may be accepted. A minimum of 2 years relevant work experience is required. Previous experience in the pharmaceutical or other related work environments is a plus. An understanding of environmental and occupational safety and health regulations is required. Must have excellent oral and written communication skills. Previous experience delivering training to a variety of audiences both technical and non-technical is highly desired. Must be team oriented with excellent interpersonal skills.

Employees must be able to lift or handle objects greater than 25 pounds to perform certain duties essential to the job function. Performance of tasks essential to the job function may require the employee to work directly with, handle, or otherwise come into contact with chemicals, pharmaceutical agents, or biological materials. Employees must be able to wear a respiratory protection (filtering face piece, full-face, or powered air purifying respirator, or self-contained breathing apparatus) for certain tasks essential to the job function. Employees will be required to enroll in a medical surveillance program based on the potential exposure to certain health hazards encountered as a result of their job function.
