The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) regulations affect physicians who train medical assistants and other auxiliary personnel to provide physical therapy services under their direct supervision. These services will no longer be eligible for Medicare reimbursement.
The CMS ruling requires that physical therapy services provided "incident to" a physician's professional services in the physician's office meet the same standards and conditions that apply to physical therapy services provided in all other Medicare outpatient settings with the exception of licensing. Physicians will be able to bill for physical therapy services provided under their direction only when the persons providing the therapy have formal physical or occupational therapy training.
