Researchers are scraping at things like subway seats to learn about sickness and wellness, and Big Pharma is getting increasingly interested in what these bacterial busters are discovering.

The buzzword is "microbiome," the bacterial playgrounds in our guts, on our skin and elsewhere around our bodies. Scientists are taking a closer look at what those bacterial communities mean in such wide-ranging diseases as inflammatory bowel diseases and Alzheimer's.
