NEWTON, Mass., Nov. 1, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Parcell Laboratories, a Newton, MA based provider of stem cell therapeutics will be presenting at the International Vatican Conference on Adult Stem Cells in Vatican City on November 10th. The conference is an exclusive event premiering the foremost experts in adult stem cell research, along with recognized leaders in the life sciences, medicine, religion, ethics and public policy. Dr. Keith Crawford will present Parcell Laboratories ELA® cell technology, which is a new adult stem cell discovered at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston and Harvard Medical School. The ELA cell is unique from other commonly known stem cells and has strong healing properties that hold significant promise in the growing science of regenerative medicine. Pamela Layton, CEO of Parcell Laboratories, notes, "We are delighted to be part of this landmark event and support the Vatican's initiative on Adult Stem Cells."
Parcell's participation at the conference supports the Vatican's sensitivity for the protection of human life at all stages of its existence. Adult stem cells are considered the ethical and moral alternative to stem cells derived from embryos. ELA cells (marketed under the name of PureGen by Alphatec Spine, Inc.) are presently being used in spinal fusion procedures to enhance healing, particularly in those patients who are compromised due to age or health considerations. Through its partnership with Alphatec Spine, over 800 patients have been implanted successfully. The ELA cells are harvested from healthy live adult donors and processed by New England Cryogenic Center (NECC) in Newton, MA. Together, Parcell and NECC adhere to the highest of standards for processing and cryopreservation to provide a pure population of highly viable ELA cells in specific therapeutic doses.
