Natural Cycles Presents New Data Analysis at the 2018 Annual Meeting of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine

STOCKHOLM, /PRNewswire/ --

Natural Cycles today presented results from a real-world observational study of its mobile app in over 54,000 women at the 2018 American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) meeting in Denver, Colorado.[1]

The aim of the study was to compare the effectiveness of Natural Cycles for preventing pregnancy between groups of users in the United States, United Kingdom, Sweden, Australia, and Finland. Natural Cycles was between 92.5% and 94.9% effective according to typical use* Pearl Index, depending on the country.[1] This data is in line with the reported typical use effectiveness of 93%, which is based on a published study of over 22,000 women.[2]

"This data adds to a growing body of scientific evidence demonstrating the real world effectiveness of Natural Cycles as a method of birth control for women who are willing to measure their temperature regularly and abstain from unprotected sex on fertile days," said Dr Simon Rowland, Head of Medical Affairs at Natural Cycles.

The study included 54,372 users between 18 and 45 years who had at least 20 data entries. For each group, contraceptive effectiveness was calculated as a typical use one-year Pearl Index (PI).  Results showed that the typical use PI was 6.1 in the US, 5.8 in the UK, 5.1 in Australia, 7.5 in Finland and 6.1 in Sweden.[1]

The analysis was conducted in collaboration with leading experts in the field of women's health.

*Typical use effectiveness takes into account several reasons for becoming pregnant while using the app: from having unprotected sex on a red day, to the app wrongly attributing a green day or the chosen method of contraception on a red day having failed.

About Natural Cycles

Natural Cycles was founded in June 2013 by former CERN physicist, Dr. Elina Berglund and her husband Dr. Raoul Scherwitzl, who also has a background in physics. Natural Cycles is an effective, natural method of contraception that is delivered in the form of an app. It uses a smart algorithm that is sensitive to subtle patterns in a woman's cycle to accurately map daily fertility, based on basal body temperature. Natural Cycles is the only app to be cleared by the FDA and CE marked in Europe for use as a contraceptive, and its typical use effectiveness rate of 93% is supported by scientific data. The app can also be used to help plan a pregnancy when the time is right. Natural Cycles' mission is to pioneer women's health with research and passion, by empowering every woman the knowledge she needs to be in charge of her health. Natural Cycles is headquartered in Sweden and has operations in the United States, Germany, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
