Farmington, Conn. – The Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine will host a groundbreaking celebration for its institutional partners on Thursday, Jan. 17, on the campus of the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington, Conn.

The daylong event marks rapid progress in establishing the new research center, which will bring together basic scientists and clinical researchers to uncover the complex genomic causes of human disease. By identifying how specific areas of the human genome contribute to health and disease, research ollaborations supported by JAX Genomic Medicine will guide precise approaches to preventing, detecting and treating disorders such as cancer and diabetes.

JAX Genomic Medicine will be housed in a new 189,000-square-foot facility that will be built on a 17-acre parcel of the UCHC campus. The LEED-certified structure will include laboratory space, scientific support services, a data processing center, conference rooms, an auditorium and shared areas for scientists working in collaboration with colleagues from the University of Connecticut, area hospitals and other research organizations. The building will be ready for occupancy in the fall of 2014.

The groundbreaking celebration is expected to attract close to 200 invited public officials, researchers, business executives and others to Farmington. A morning open house will precede comments from Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, UConn President Susan Herbst, Ph.D., UCHC School of Medicine Dean Frank Torti, M.D., M.P.H. and JAX President and CEO Edison Liu, M.D. Following an afternoon academic seminar presented by genomicist Charles Lee, Ph.D., of Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, a reception and professional networking opportunity will wrap up the day’s activities.

Working in partnership with UConn and the state’s Bioscience Connecticut initiative, Laboratory officials have kept The Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine project on schedule to meet milestones for job creation and facilities planning and construction. More than two dozen new employees already are working in temporary quarters on the UCHC campus, including four principal investigators and members of their laboratory teams. The lean administrative group includes a site director, a facilities manager, a computer network engineer, and a human resource manager. Longer term, JAX Genomic Medicine will employ 300 biomedical researchers, technicians and support staff by 2020.

Construction of the new facility also will create many jobs in the regional economy. The team of Centerbrook Architects of Centerbrook, Conn., Tsoi/Kobus & Associates of Cambridge, Mass., BVH Integrated Services of Bloomfield, Conn., and BR+A of Watertown, Mass., is providing architectural and engineering design for the project. Gilbane, Inc., a New England construction firm with a district office in Glastonbury, Conn., is the program manager. Construction management services are provided by the Whiting-Turner Contracting Company, which has a regional office in New Haven, Conn.

With essential design and construction decisions finalized, bidding for individual subcontracts began in early October. An initial bid package of $25 million was awarded at the end of October.

The Jackson Laboratory is an independent, nonprofit biomedical research institution based in Bar Harbor, Maine, with a facility in Sacramento, Calif., and a new genomic medicine institute in Farmington, Conn. It employs a total staff of more than 1,400. Its mission is to discover precise genomic solutions for disease and empower the global biomedical community in the shared quest to improve human health.
