Disc Motion Technologies Announces First Human Implants of True TSMS(TM) Device
Published: Jun 12, 2008
ANKARA, Turkey, June 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Disc Motion Technologies announced the completion of the first surgical procedure to implant the True Total Spinal Motion Segment System (TM) (TSMS(TM)), the first total joint replacement system for the lumbar spine, featuring an artificial lumbar disc and posterior dynamic stabilization device (PDS). The successful procedure was performed on May 22nd, 2008 at Ankara Numune Education and Training Hospital by Dr. Erkan Kaptanoglu, Department of Neurosurgery.
"The procedure involving the implantation of an artificial lumbar disc and PDS in a 46-year old female patient went very well," said Dr. Kaptanoglu. "The familiar posterior surgical approach used to implant the True TSMS(TM) avoids the potential dangers of vascular complications as seen with devices using an anterior approach thus leading to better patient outcomes."
Tai Friesem, MD, who with Manoj Krishna, FRCS of Stockton-on-Tees, United Kingdom, developed the devices, also attended the surgery and provided additional training. Friesem stated, "The True TSMS(TM) can be used in a wider number of patients than the anterior lumbar devices. The unique system deals with all three pain generators - the disc, nerve and facet joint - as well as increases range of motion in patients who suffer from the debilitating effects of DDD."
It is now three weeks after the surgery has taken place and the patient has returned to her normal daily routine. She is functioning better than ever and feels the implant has helped make this possible.
"This is truly a major milestone for the company," stated Andy Greenberg, incoming CEO of Disc Motion Technologies, Boca Raton, FL. "Our recent approval to affix the CE Mark to the components of the TSMS clears the way for Disc Motion Technologies to further develop and expand its franchise in the spine surgery marketplace in Europe, Middle East and Asia. It is a testament to the efforts of the entire Disc Motion team."
