Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) President Jim Greenwood Applauds President's Initiatives In State Of The Union Address

WASHINGTON, Jan. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Jim Greenwood, president of the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO), applauded the President for the initiatives outlined in his State of the Union Address:

"I commend the President for recognizing the need to increase our nation's global competitiveness. America is the world leader in biotechnology. We must ensure that America's biotechnology industry has the resources and workforce necessary to compete with China, India and the rest of the world. Doubled funding for science research and strengthened math and science education will aid upcoming generations of scientists to create innovative new therapies to cure our loved ones, cleaner energy sources to meet our growing energy needs and more healthful food to feed the world's population.

"The Advanced Energy Initiative will increase America's competitiveness by providing clean, affordable energy sources that will enable us to lessen our dependence on foreign oil through biotechnology. Using crop wastes, we can produce tens of billions of gallons of ethanol. We could produce 25 percent of our transportation fuel need by 2015 if we dramatically ramp up biorefinery development.

"A competitive America requires a healthy workforce. I applaud the President for his continued commitment to make healthcare more affordable and available, and look forward to working with him and his Administration to meet this challenge."
