SAN DIEGO, Feb. 4, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Biocom, the association representing the Southern California life science community, welcomed Congress' final and long-overdue passage of the Farm Bill.

"Biocom has been working tirelessly these past two years to ensure passage of a five-year extension of the Farm Bill that would provide mandatory funding for the Energy Title and renewable chemicals parity," said Joe Panetta, President and CEO of Biocom. "We congratulate Senate and House Agriculture Committee leaders for their hard work on the bill, and thank California Senators Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer, and San Diego Representatives Susan Davis and Darrell Issa for voting in favor of it."

Southern California is one of the world's leading innovators in industrial biotechnology. Since 2002, Farm Bills have funded energy programs which have facilitated the development of a vigorous biobased economy. Under the new bill, the Energy Title will receive $881 million in mandatory funding.

"Biocom is also very pleased that Congress finally recognized the important role renewable chemicals technologies play in the U.S. biobased market by extending funding eligibility to renewable chemicals," added Panetta. "Continued funding for energy programs in the Farm Bill will create more certainty and new opportunities for biofuels and biorenewables companies in Southern California and throughout the country."
