Applied DNA Sciences, Inc. Release: The Chinese Government Selects DNA Anti-Counterfeit Technology As The Official Standard For Multimedia Product Protection

STONY BROOK, N.Y., Dec. 21 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Applied DNA Sciences, Inc. , today announced that the Chinese Government has selected the DNA encryption technology developed by APDN's licensee, Biowell Technology, Inc. ("Biowell"), as the official standard for their anti-counterfeit program to protect multimedia products.

At the invitation of the Chinese Government, Biowell Technology developed the criteria and specifications that resulted in the new official standard for DNA security and authentication. DNA encrypted labels will be applied to millions of multimedia products, principally DVDs, CDs and VCDs. This new anti-counterfeit program was initiated by the Chinese Government to provide the highest level of security in an effort to protect intellectual property and prevent piracy and to deter the production of counterfeit multimedia products.

Dr. Jun-Jei Sheu, Chairman of Biowell, stated: "Counterfeiting and piracy is a problem in China and around the world. Our proprietary DNA encryption technology is unique and is playing an important role in the Chinese Government's anti-counterfeiting program that protects intellectual property, businesses and consumers."

APDN's DNA encryption technology utilizes discrete segments of botanical DNA that are extracted from plants and serve as the encryption code. The microscopic DNA code is embedded in a proprietary protective coating that withstands commercial processing and gives the DNA a life of several hundred years. The DNA can be integrated into inks, paper, thread, holograms and many other products. The custom DNA can be extracted and analyzed to verify the authenticity of the product and the brand.

In June 2005, the General Administration Office for Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine and the Bureau of Standards of China, officially proclaimed that APDN's patented DNA encryption technology that has been back-licensed to Biowell for applications in Asia would be implemented as the national standard for anti-counterfeit purposes. In 2005, Biowell produced over 600 million anti-counterfeit labels that were carried on multimedia products. This represents a new beginning in product and brand protection in China based on DNA encryption technology.

Dr. James A. Hayward, CEO of APDN, said: "DNA encryption technology provides the highest level of protection and authentication for a range of products and services. We believe that it offers global businesses and governments a strategic and more secure alternative to security solutions on the market today. APDN will enjoy a 10% royalty revenue from Biowell's application of this technology in Asia."
