Precision Dynamics - St. John Introduces New Hybrid Style Securline(R) Bar Code Blood Band for Blood Recipient Identification

VALENCIA, CA--(Marketwire - August 01, 2012) -

Precision Dynamics - St. John, the global leader in healthcare identification solutions, announced today the release of the new hybrid version of the Securline® Bar Code Blood Band, a blood recipient ID wristband system that provides automated patient identification for blood transfusion, specimen collection, and tracking. The hybrid version features a dual-function patient information area that accommodates either a pre-printed patient ID label or handwritten information. This feature is ideal for integrated delivery networks with multiple, laboratory organizations because it allows them to consolidate and standardize to a single blood band, regardless of individual lab preference for handwritten information or LIS labels.

The Securline® Bar Code Blood Band is pre-printed with unique alpha-numeric bar codes to accurately match the right patient to the right blood. This improves patient safety by preventing identification related human errors that can occur during the blood transfusion process. Using bar coding for automated identification, the Securline® Bar Code Blood Band meets The Joint Commission's National Patient Safety Goal for blood transfusions, NPSG.01.03.01, Elements of Performance (EP), for a one-person verification process (versus two-person verification).

Unique, innovative features of the hybrid version Securline® Bar Code Blood Band include:

  • V-Notch™ patient ID label that is specially designed to work with BD Vacutainer® Plus Plastic Collection Tubes to ensure proper label alignment for accurate identification and bar code scanning
  • Reattachment feature allows users to reattach the blood band after surgery
  • Ability for organizations using LIS to have a handwritten option for urgent/stat blood transfusions while offering the protection of bar coding
  • Downtime solution for users encountering LIS downtime, allows a back-up method to handwrite patient information on the blood band
  • Standardization and consolidation solution for organizations with multiple labs that may currently be using a combination of LIS labels and handwriting

The Securline® Bar Code Blood Band features an easy-to-use snap style closure which saves hospital staff time. It offers a total of 20 matching bar code labels (128 bar code symbology): 8 bar code labels on the wristband and 12 bar code labels on the draw tube tail that can be applied to additional draw tubes, patient charts, transfusion requisitions, and as a secondary label on blood bags. Soft, latex-free, Phthalate-free material maximizes patient comfort and safety yet is also durable and strong to last throughout the patient's stay.

"The use of bar coding technology in labs and hospitals continues to steadily increase as hospitals are focused on preventing misidentification errors to maximize patient safety. Replacing some of the human-dependant verification processes with automated identification not only promotes patient safety, it also improves workflow efficiencies which saves hospital resources," said Kim Canchola, product manager for Precision Dynamics - St. John. "We can ensure a seamless conversion to the Securline® Bar Code Blood Band for hospitals already using some form of blood band identification. It works with existing blood bank systems and without IT involvement or capital investment, making it an easy and effective option to advance to automated identification."

The Securline® Bar Code Blood Band meets current Joint Commission, AHA, and HIPAA requirements. For more information, please visit: www.pdcorp.com/healthcare or contact Precision Dynamics - St. John's Customer Care at 800-435-4242.
