Pharma Controls Clinical Trials of Their Drugs. Is This Hazardous to Your Health?

In a recent article entitled “Why Pharma is bad for your health”, the author questions the wisdom of Pharma sponsoring its own clinical trials. Taking a cue from Ben Goldacre’s book, Bad Pharma, the following position is taken. “It’s clear from the start that there is a deep conflict of interest in pharmaceutical companies sponsoring trials on their own drugs. Industry sponsors 90% of published clinical trials. A worrying statistic given that, as Goldacre shows, industry-sponsored trials are four times as likely to produce positive results than independently run experiments.”
