The beautiful thing about randomized controlled clinical trials, which are a foundation of modern medicine, is that when they are done well they are simple and clear. Patients are randomly assigned to get one treatment or another, and at a predetermined moment the two groups are compared to one another. Researchers, like a pool shark sinking the eight ball, must predict what is going to happen accurately at the beginning of a study, and not change course. Then, if they are right, there is no doubting the results. When a study really works, you can state the benefit of a treatment in a sentence, its side effects in a few more. The ideal clinical trial result would require little discussion, little explanation.
