ISOThrive Study Reveals Novel Bacterial microFood May Relieve Acid Reflux by Restoring the Distal Esophageal Microbiome

First Ever Report of a Prebiotic Improving Acid Reflux

HEALDSBURG, Calif., Dec. 4, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Integrative Medicine published a case series that examined the effectiveness of a novel bacterial microFood™ (a.k.a. "prebiotic") to relieve acid reflux.  88% of patients experienced symptom improvement. 17% experienced complete symptom resolution.

The article highlights a new understanding of the microbiome in patients with chronic acid reflux. Research has shown an abnormal gram-negative bacterial abundance at the lower esophageal sphincter (LES).  To date, no one has successfully manipulated these bacterial colonies to restore normal gram-positive predominance. The authors hypothesize that by taking a novel harmless carbohydrate, the LES microbiome normalizes and normal function returns. Symptom relief results as acid no longer backs up into the esophagus. The article also explains the root cause of chronic acid reflux is not from increased acid production, but a weak or too frequently open LES, which is linked to abnormal bacterial overgrowth.  This insight is similar to the ground-breaking discovery that H. pylori is the primary cause of gastric ulcers.

"Resolving chronic heartburn/acid reflux using 'food' for bacteria is a novel solution," said Jack Oswald, ISOThrive co-founder, CEO and CTO.  "We have developed a microFood that nourishes specific bacteria in the digestive tract to address bacterial imbalances that are at the root of many chronic health issues including acid reflux."

Acid reflux affects at least 30% of the population (over 100 million in the US).  The most commonly prescribed treatment is a class of drugs called Proton Pump Inhibitors such as Omeprazole, Prilosec (P&G), Prevacid/Dexalant (Takeda), Protonix (Pfizer), Nexium (AstraZeneca), Aciphex (Eisai).  These medications are felt to be generally safe but may be linked with potential risks and serious health consequences (Harvard Medical School).  Because of the huge exposure, finding safer new therapies is of high importance. This is the first report of symptom improvement in chronic acid reflux from an ingested prebiotic soluble fiber.
