Methadone Treatment Causes Substantial Decrease in Male Testosterone Levels

Treating addiction to heroin and other opioid drugs with methadone interferes with testosterone levels in men but not in women, new research has shown. The study conducted by Scientific Reports reported that addicts treated with methadone had about one-quarter of the testosterone found in men who did not abuse drugs. The study of 1,000 people also found no major changes in the testosterone levels of women addicts. While researchers were not surprised that testosterone levels were lower among male opioid users, they were shocked by the magnitude of the reduction.

Low testosterone levels not only lead to sexual issues, but they also affect weight, muscle mass, mood and concentration. Therefore, the study suggests doctors who are treating opioid users should be aware of the effects of methadone on male testosterone levels. Doctors should check patients’ hormone levels before starting their treatment and monitor the levels throughout treatment. Scientists also suggest doctors prescribe patients the lowest possible dose of methadone that would be effective for treatment.

“While methadone treatment is important for opioid users to undergo, it’s equally important for the therapeutic process to not disrupt testosterone levels,” said Mary Mraz of Vydox, the world’s leading male enhancement solution. “Regardless of age, men need healthy testonerone levels to retain their energy and concentration as well as healthy muscle mass and weight. It’s vital for men who experience low testosterone levels to see their doctor right away and consider taking a natural hormone supplement.”

Mary Mraz is currently available to discuss how methadone treatment causes lower testosterone levels in men, as well as how Vydox testosterone supplements can help. If you are interested in scheduling an interview, please contact Nicole Romeo at
