DMAA's 2nd Annual International DM Summit Sets New Attendance Record & Honors Germany And Australia With DMAA's Pioneers In Excellence Award
WASHINGTON, Oct. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Healthcare professionals from around the world once again convened for DMAA's 2nd Annual International Disease Management Summit held this year at the Marriott World Center in Orlando, Florida, October 19-20th.
As in the United States, the international community is faced with an aging population and the need to re-engineer national policies towards the management of chronic disease versus acute medicine. This unique two-day Summit was developed last year to provide a continuing forum for our international colleagues to discuss the practices, challenges and results of leading disease management programs.
The 2nd Annual International DM Summit featured an expanded program with a faculty representing 11 countries. Faculty members from Europe, Asia, Australia, and South America shared their experiences on the design, development and implementation of disease management programs in their respective healthcare environments with new presentations from Spain, Taiwan, Brazil and the UK. A special video welcome was given by Per-Gunnar Svensson, Director-General, International Hospital Federation, and last year's Summit Chair. The keynote address was presented by Cor Spreeuwenberg, MD, PhD, from Maastricht University & University Hospital, Department of Integrated Care in the Netherlands. Professor Spreeuwenberg, who combined his research on the US disease management industry and his expertise of European healthcare delivery systems to develop an integrated model of disease management, addressed the skepticism of some European health professionals that disease management may harm quality of care and will make patients and caregivers dependent on third parties.
The Summit also featured a special international welcome reception giving faculty and attendees a chance to mingle and network with their colleagues across the globe. In total 20 countries were represented at the Summit which afforded a highly stimulating and enriched learning environment.
Executive Director, Warren Todd also presented DMAA's Pioneers in Excellence Award to the Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Disease Management Association and the Australian Disease Management Association. Mr. Todd noted that "the formation of these two associations demonstrate that the need to better address chronic disease is a world-wide problem. We look forward to collaborating with our colleagues in Germany and Australia in the continued expansion of the DM community." Accepting the awards were Dan Hook of Australian Health Management Group and Helmut Hildebrandt of Hildebrandt GesundheitsConsult GmbH. Both recipients are members of the Board of Directors of their respective organizations.
