MADISON, Wis., August 14, 2014 — Covance Inc. (NYSE: CVD), the world’s most comprehensive drug development company and a leader in nutritional analysis, partnered with the National Association of Free and Charitable Clinics (NAFC) for a third year to support a day-long clinic where uninsured and underinsured patients in the Madison, Wisconsin, area were given access to free medical attention. The NAFC’s C.A.R.E. (Communities Are Responding Everyday) Clinic, sponsored by the Covance Charitable Foundation, brought together more than 650 medical and non-medical volunteers on August 9, 2014, including 90 Covance employees, to diagnose, treat and counsel patients with a wide range of health care needs.

“Our mission to bring the miracles of medicine to market sooner is made tangible by helping NAFC provide people with health care they urgently need,” said Randy Stoltz, MD, Medical Director at Covance Evansville. “The people who volunteer for clinical trials we run at Covance have the potential to make a difference in the lives of many, and at these pop-up clinics we are able to give back as an organization by helping those with limited or no access to medical care.

“This was my third year volunteering, and the clinic continues to be an extremely rewarding experience, especially when it’s evident that one day can change the outcome of a patient’s entire life. In one case this year, a patient with multiple leg ulcers, which had the potential to result in infection and loss of a limb, had gone without medical care for more than a year. Fortunately, he came for care and was treated and arrangements were made for follow-up care.”

Since 2012, more than 2,000 patients have been treated at three one-day clinics held in Dallas, New Orleans, and Madison, Wisconsin. This year’s contingent of Covance volunteers included five doctors, 12 nurses, 10 laboratory technicians and two pharmacists, who provided basic screenings and individualized medical attention to patients from Wisconsin and neighboring states with life-threatening conditions such as hypertension, HIV, diabetes, and obesity. Patients also had access to a health education center where they could learn about assistance available through local social services organizations; counseling from pharmacists on how to appropriately take their prescribed medications; and discharge planning, which offers referrals to local clinics for continued affordable or free health care.

“This is the third year we’ve worked with Covance to treat hundreds of under- and uninsured patients, and truly make a difference in their lives, whether through diagnosis or long-term treatment of chronic conditions,” said Nicole Lamoureux, Executive Director of the NAFC. “We’ve set up 14 one-day, free clinics across the country, from Seattle to Washington, D.C., and in each instance, we’ve seen the tremendous positive impact that just one day can make in bettering the lives of so many. This year alone, 175 people were diagnosed onsite with diabetes, and 350 prescriptions were written, with Rx Outreach providing three months of free medication for each prescription. We continue to host these clinics to address an enormous unmet need in our health care system. With each clinic, our medical and non-medical volunteers have the potential to change the quality of life for patients and their families by arming them with information and access to appropriate treatments.”
