In September 2005, then-Gov. Jeb Bush joined Scripps executives at the first groundbreaking of Scripps Florida. He had referred to the secret effort to lure Scripps as “Project Air Conditioning,” because of how he expected biotechnology to transform the state economy. / Palm Beach Post

Florida’s bioscience industry saw flat job growth between 2007 and 2012, with employment holding steady at 78,925, according to the Biotechnology Industry Organization and the research firm Batelle.
