Michael Weiner, MD Joins The Board Of Alzheimer’s Research For A Cure Foundation

San Francisco, CA (September 24, 2008) - Alzheimer’s Research for a Cure Foundation (ARFAC) is pleased to announce that Michael Weiner, MD, Director of the Center for Imaging of Neurodegenerative Diseases at San Francisco VA/UCSF, and recipient of the Middleton Award for outstanding research, has joined their board. ARFAC is a newly formed non-profit 501 (c) 3 foundation dedicated to support research into new and effective treatments for Alzheimer’s Disease.

Dr. Weiner has been associated with the San Francisco VA/UCSF since 1980. As Director of the Center for Imaging of Neurodegenerative Diseases, he is the Principle Investigator of the NIA funded $70 million Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative, as well as a Professor of Radiology, Medicine, Psychiatry, and Neurology at UCSF with two research MRIS.

Dr. Weiner is a specialist in Alzheimer’s Disease-related research. He has published over 400 papers and his research grants include funded studies of Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, frontotemporal dementia, gulf war illness, posttraumatic stress disorder, HIV, and other neurodegenerative diseases. Dr. Weiner received his medical degree from SUNY Upstate Medical Center, Syracuse, NY, and completed his internship at Mount Sinai Hospital, New York, NY.

“Dr. Weiner brings to our board valuable first-hand experience and insights with respect to both clinical research and Alzheimer’s disease. We are fortunate to have his expertise and commitment to our mutual goal,” said Rem Kinne, IV, ARFAC board member.

“I am very excited about joining the Board of ARFAC in order to facilitate support of vital research leading to the treatment and prevention of Alzheimer's disease,” commented, Dr. Weiner.

ARFAC’s goal is to provide sufficient supplemental funding to our annually selected beneficiaries to enable them to make significant increases in the staffing and funding of their ongoing Alzheimer’s research programs. ARFAC will hold its inaugural fundraising event: The Alzheimer’s Gala: An Evening for the Mind, February 6, 2009, at the historic Ferry Building in San Francisco. Other ARFAC board members are: Scott Harkonen, MD and CEO of CoMentis, Remsen Kinne, IV Partner with K & L Gates, Maggy Howe, President of MHowe Executive Events, Strategic, and Cause Marketing, Adrienne Mally, Principal at Eaton Capital.
