SEATTLE, April 8, 2008 /PRNewswire/ -- Seattle-based Stratos Product Development has been recognized as a supplier to Datascope's NetGuard Patient Monitoring System, a winning product in the 2008 Medical Design Excellence Awards (MDEA) contest. The MDEA competition is the premier awards program for the medical technology community, recognizing the achievements of medical product manufacturers and the many people behind the scenes who are responsible for the groundbreaking innovations that are changing the face of healthcare.

"We chose Stratos as a key supplier of engineering and design services for the NetGuard Patient Monitoring System because of their experience in patient monitoring, wireless software development, wearable human factors and miniaturized electronics," said Gary Manning, director of NetGuard Business for Datascope. "This expertise, along with their total systems approach to product development, allowed us to consider all the tradeoffs in usability, functional performance, site management and total cost of ownership. They helped us navigate requirements and, ultimately, meet the project objectives to take this product to market."

The NetGuard Patient Monitoring System includes a re-usable body worn device with extremely low powered wireless electronics. This low cost, resource constrained device contains software for ECG signal acquisition and analysis as well as ZigBee networking protocols and power management. The system also includes a disposable ECG adhesive electrode and a wireless network access point.

"Datascope's long history of innovation and extensive experience in developing and manufacturing a broad range of patient monitoring, intravascular and cardiac assist devices combined with Stratos' 20-year background in bringing products to market through superior design, engineering and project management expertise made for a collaborative and successful product development relationship," said Stratos president Sean MacLeod. "We are thrilled that they chose to recognize our collaborative and successful relationship by sharing this prestigious award."

The product originated with the Datascope Patient Monitoring Group, which recognized a need to identify cardiac arrhythmia events in patients not typically monitored. The challenge was to create a patient monitoring device that would reliably alert hospital staff, move easily throughout the hospital with the patient and be low cost enough to monitor all patients while in the care of the hospital.

Stratos provided a true systems solution that involved its industrial design, software, electrical, mechanical, quality engineering, verification and program management experts to help make the NetGuard Patient Monitoring System a reality.
