The biopharma job market is constantly evolving. As pharmaceutical companies expand and new biotech organizations launch, employers and recruiters have begun exploring more efficient and effective ways to connect with qualified candidates. Job seekers have changed their approach in response, from the formatting of their resumes to the tools they use to stand out from the crowd. Consider the following emerging job search trends recently identified at the Global Career Brainstorming Day hosted by the Career Thought Leaders Consortium.
1. If you want biopharma employers to find you, you must be online.
From building relationships with future candidates via industry discussion groups to searching career sites for job seeker resumes, recruiters and employers are increasingly relying on the Internet to discover and connect with potential hires. If employers don’t find you online, it’s safe to say you are missing out on some of the best job opportunities. Fortunately, it’s easy for pharmaceutical and biotech job seekers to establish an Internet presence.
Start by posting your resume on an industry specific job board such as BioSpace. Next, create professional profiles on the major social media platforms. Finally, set up a personal website to showcase your experience and achievements. According to the Career Thought Leaders Consortium, personal websites are growing in popularity.
2. If you want to stand out, you must create a personal brand.
With so many research assistants, scientists, and QA specialists vying for every available job, it can be tough to stand out in the sea of applicants. Creating a personal brand can help tremendously because it enables you to communicate who you are, what you do, and the value you can add to the biopharma industry in an eloquent yet succinct way. When you present yourself as a brand rather than just a job seeker, you make it easier for employers to identify the traits that make you a uniquely appealing candidate.
Make the most of your personal brand by including it in every interaction you have with employers. Brand your social media profile, personal website, resume, and cover letter. According to the Career Thought Leaders Consortium, short personal branding statements are even replacing introductory paragraphs on many resumes.
3. An unconventional approach can also get employers to notice you.
According to the Career Thought Leaders Consortium, younger job seekers—particularly Millennials—are beginning to present themselves to employers using unconventional mediums such as videos and infographics rather than traditional resumes. While most biopharma employers will eventually require you to submit a formal resume or application before hire, a video biography or graphical representation of your experience and achievements may serve as an effective door opener. Consider including links to these types of promotional tools in your resume, on your social media profiles, and within your email signature block as well.
4. Job boards are another useful tool you should not neglect.
According to the Career Thought Leaders Consortium, job boards—particularly of the niche variety—are still a popular tool for connecting professionals and employers. In addition to posting their resume and applying for positions, biopharma job seekers can use niche job boards such as BioSpace to research pharmaceutical companies, biotechnology organizations, and medical device manufacturers of interest as well as harvest keywords for use on their personal website and social media profiles.
