BOSTON – June 19, 2013 – Z-Medica LLC, a leading developer and marketer of hemostatic agents, and the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center (MLSC) announced today that the company has opened a new office at 470 Atlantic Avenue in Boston, MA. The new office, which opened on May 1, 2013, enables Z-Medica to bring the company closer to one of the world’s most active regions for research to advance new therapies to control bleeding.
Z-Medica manufactures the QuikClot® family of hemostatic products. QuikClot is used to treat bleeding by healthcare professionals, law enforcement, first responders, adventure and outdoor sports enthusiasts, veterinarians, and consumers. QuikClot Combat Gauze® is the only hemostat recommended by the U.S. Department of Defense for all branches of the U.S. military for treatment of severe hemorrhage on the battlefield. This month Z-Medica launched a new line of products specifically designed to meet the unique needs of Emergency Medical Services.
“As our company continues to grow and develop new and more effective products to control bleeding, our presence in Boston will represent a great opportunity for us to join with worldwide leaders in life science and academic research who are developing therapies that require advanced hemostasis products,” said Larry Hicks, President and Chief Executive Officer at Z-Medica. “At the same time, our new office in Boston will allow us to meet the needs of all of our customers in the region with the highest possible levels of responsiveness and innovation.”
“In Massachusetts we invest in the life sciences because we are choosing to shape our own future,” said Governor Deval Patrick. “I welcome Z-Medica to our life sciences supercluster and look forward to the jobs and economic opportunities they will bring.”
Through the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center, Massachusetts is investing $1 billion over 10 years in the growth of the state’s life sciences supercluster. These investments are being made under the Massachusetts Life Sciences Initiative, proposed by Governor Patrick in 2007, and passed by the State Legislature and signed into law by Governor Patrick in 2008.
“On behalf of the team at the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center, I am excited to welcome Z-Medica to the Commonwealth,” said MLSC President & CEO Dr. Susan Windham-Bannister. “Z-Medica’s technology is changing how medical professionals approach wound care management in patients, enabling haemostasis, or the stoppage of bleeding, more quickly and efficiently. We look forward to supporting Z-Medica as its team puts down roots and grows in Massachusetts.”
QuikClot products are now in their third generation and are impregnated with a mineral called kaolin that has been clinically shown to accelerate the body’s natural coagulation cascade. Kaolin is a naturally-occurring, inert mineral that does not contain any botanicals, biological material, or shellfish products. It does not cause any exothermic reaction or vascular complications and there are no known complications. QuikClot products are credited with helping thousands of people survive traumatic blood loss events every year.
“Massachusetts also has a range of important incentives and support services designed to help innovative medical device and life science companies grow and succeed,” Hicks added. “We look forward to partnering with the MLSC and many other organizations in Massachusetts to develop new research and business opportunities for Z-Medica in the years ahead.”
“I’m excited to welcome the maker of such an important life-saving technology to Boston,” said Mayor Thomas M. Menino. “Z-Medica’s choice to come to our city where there is access to world-class hospitals and unparalleled workforce talent, will drive innovation in their field and grow their company.”
