Schleyer to Lead Biomedical Informatics at Regenstrief Institute

INDIANAPOLIS -- Titus Schleyer, DMD, Ph.D., MBA, an internationally respected leader in the rapidly advancing field of health care informatics, has been named to lead the Center for Biomedical Informatics at the Regenstrief Institute.

Dr. Schleyer comes to the Regenstrief Institute and Indiana University from the University of Pittsburgh, where he is associate professor of dental public health and founding director of the Center for Dental Informatics in the School of Dental Medicine, as well as co-director of the Biomedical Informatics Training Program in the School of Medicine. He is the most published author worldwide in the field of dental informatics.

Originally from Germany, Dr. Schleyer earned a Doctor of Dental Medicine and a Ph.D. in molecular biology at the University of Frankfurt am Main. He subsequently received a second dental degree and an MBA in health administration from Temple University in Philadelphia.

A pioneer in biomedical informatics, Dr. Schleyer has been conducting research since 1989, leading seminal studies on clinical computing, electronic dental records, Internet applications, and workflow and human-computer interaction in dentistry. His research on dental computer applications has been primarily funded by the National Institutes of Health. In 2009, he was elected to the American College of Medical Informatics, a select group of individuals who have made significant and sustained contributions to the field of biomedical informatics.

“I have known of the Regenstrief Institute, learned from its work, and admired its prominence in informatics research and implementation since my days as a student in Europe," Dr. Schleyer said. "Coming to Regenstrief to direct the Center for Biomedical Informatics is more than a dream come true. As a researcher and a clinician, I look forward to leading Regenstrief’s informaticians as we develop innovations to improve health care delivery and outcomes locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.”

Dr. Schleyer will be only the third director of Regenstrief’s Center for Biomedical Informatics. He will also serve as co-director of Translational Informatics with the Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute.

Most doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other providers spend most of their time gathering, sorting, understanding, recording and transmitting information," said William M. Tierney, M.D., president and CEO of the Regenstrief Institute and associate dean for clinical effectiveness research at the Indiana University School of Medicine. "Electronic medical record systems are supposed to improve the safety, quality and efficiency of care, but such systems are often clunky and difficult to use. Regenstrief is a global leader in developing and implementing helpful, user-friendly health information systems, and Titus is exactly the right person to lead Regenstrief and the health informatics world to help realize this potential of electronic medical records.”
