Individuals with certain gene variants appear less able to resist Candida skin infections, explaining the observation that chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis (CMC) runs in families, researchers suggested. Analyzing 14 patients from five families affected with CMC, Dutch and British researchers found missense mutations in the STAT1 gene, an important player in immune function, according to an online report in the New England Journal of Medicine.
