  • Clarify's smartphone-based UVB Treatment System for psoriasis, eczema, vitiligo to be introduced in 2017

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Clarify Medical, Inc. today announced that it had completed a $3.6 million private financing with existing and new investors. The company will use the proceeds in the introduction of its new handheld mobile UVB (Ultra Violet B) Treatment System, which is used to clear skin lesions in patients with chronic skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema and vitiligo.

“Their vision, financial commitment and contributions of expertise have made this significant innovation in patient care possible.”

“We are delighted with the support we've received from our existing and new investors,” said David F. Hale, Clarify Medical's Chairman of the Board. “Their vision, financial commitment and contributions of expertise have made this significant innovation in patient care possible.”

The Clarify™ UVB treatment system allows convenient home phototherapy linked to patients’ physicians through their patients’ smartphones. A lightweight handheld device linked to the phone guides patients in delivering brief doses of UVB phototherapy precisely where it is needed, according to their physician's prescription. Physicians review the progress of phototherapy through summary reports during office visits, but also have internet access to full therapy data, including photographs of changes in skin condition, when more information is required. UVB therapy, currently provided mainly in physicians’ offices or in phototherapy clinics, is well established for the treatment of chronic skin conditions.

Clarify Medical plans to submit its system for FDA clearance early in 2017 and introduce its product and information support services later in the year.

“Clarify’s system brings the proven treatment UVB therapy, currently challenging for many patients to access, into the comfort of home,” said James M. Sweeney, Clarify Medical's CEO. “Instead of making multiple weekly trips through traffic to a physician’s office or a UVB clinic to receive therapy for a few minutes, patients can deliver treatments themselves at times and locations that fit into their schedules. For busy dermatologists with office space and time constraints that often preclude offering UVB therapy, Clarify offers a way of offering a home treatment while continuing to monitor patient care.”

Mobile Wireless Technology Integrated With An Innovative Medical Device

“Clarify’s system is an example of the power of wireless communication aligned with patient and physician needs – and integrated with medical technology innovations,” continued Sweeney. Jim Sweeney is a serial entrepreneur who founded CardioNet, which introduced Mobile Cardiac Outpatient Telemetry, used to diagnose and treat difficult to detect arrhythmia; Caremark, the company that pioneered the home infusion therapy industry; as well as other entrepreneurial health care companies.
