Job Description

The Vice President of Production provides leadership to the Production department, ensuring the organizations’ compliance with current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) requirements together with the fulfillment of the business objectives of the company.  The Vice President of Production is required to manage assigned production resources skillfully and efficiently to meet customer deliverables and timelines as well as the company quality standards. The Vice President of Production improves working and safety standards as well as lean manufacturing and is setting up and leading projects in every field of the production environment.


•   Contribute to the formulation of long-term strategies as a member of the local site management team
•   Assist company senior staff members in the development of long and short-range planning, policies, programs and objectives
•   Hire, train, develop and evaluate staff.  Expand and maintain the necessary skill base through recruitment of qualified staff
•   Develop the manufacturing plan and establish procedures for maintaining high standards of manufacturing operations to ensure that products conform to established customer and company quality standards
•   Formulate and recommend manufacturing policies and programs that guide the organization in maintaining and improving its competitive position and the profitability of the operation
•   Ensure compliance with cGMP regulations
•   Direct and monitor Production Directors and Managers to accomplish goals of the manufacturing plan, consistent with established manufacturing and safety procedures.  Act as liaison to inform Production personnel of communications, decisions, policies and all matters that affect their decision and results
•   Represent Bachem during customer visits, cGMP audits, and regulatory agency inspections
•   Ensure current federal, state and local regulations.  Consult with Human Resources and EHS&S Departments as appropriate.  Take corrective action as necessary on a timely basis and in accordance with company policy
•   Identify, recommend and implement changes to improve productivity and reduce cost and product failure.  Direct the establishment, implementation and maintenance of production standards
•   Direct and coordinate various programs essential to manufacturing procedures (e.g. training, safety, housekeeping, cost monitoring, worker involvement, security, etc.)
•   Initiate and coordinate major projects (e.g. lean manufacturing, plant layout changes, installation of capital equipment, major repairs, etc.)
•   Keep current on information and technologies affecting functional areas to increase innovation and ensure regulatory compliance.  Recognize trends and implement improvements and innovations in order to meet future business requirements
•   Formulate manufacturing operations strategies, build and mentor manufacturing employees to drive business results
•   Stay abreast of developing new technologies and manufacturing procedures and pursue continuous improvement throughout the organization to reach business and operational excellence.


•   Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry or Chemical Engineering or related field with a minimum of 7 years’ experience in a GMP production environment or
•   Master’s Degree in Organic Chemistry or Chemical Engineering or related field with a minimum of 10 years’ experience in a GMP production environment
•   High competence in new trends and emerging technologies in drug manufacturing and drug development
•   Minimum of 7 years’ managerial experience
•   Thorough understanding of cGMP requirements
•   Minimum of 5-years’ experience managing a significant production segment of a large manufacturer in a lean manufacturing environment
•   Knowledge of occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) safety rules
•   Strong interpersonal skills with an understanding of diverse backgrounds and an emphasis on communication with customers, negotiation skills, interdepartmental interaction, leadership, supervision and management (budgeting, projecting quotes and analyzing cost reports)
•   Excellent written and oral communication skills
•   Experience with planning, change and high emphasis with project management
•   Experience streamlining processes, and overcoming problems in a solutions oriented manner  – e.g. lean six sigma/ Tree/ Fishbone/ 5 Why’s/ Pareto/ 7 thinking steps
•   Basic computer knowledge, including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
•   Ability to effectively organize, multitask, and work in a fast-paced, deadline driven work environment
•   Ability to communicate in a proactive and solution-focused manner in a team environment, including keeping management aware of potential issues
•   Detail oriented with the ability to troubleshoot and resolve problems and to eliminate the cause in a sustainable matter
•   Ability to work independently and manage one’s time
