As a Transaction Director in Gaithersburg, MD, you’ll play a pivotal role in channelling our scientific capabilities to make a positive impact on changing patients’ lives. IMED (Innovative Medicines and Early Development) focuses on scientific advances in small molecules, oligonucleotides and other emerging technologies and drug discovery platforms across our focus areas.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

As the Transaction Director you will lead all aspects of the transactional phase for business development opportunities. You will be able to handle a wide range of projects and work through the transaction process from end to end, engaging with prospective partners, negotiating and finalizing contracts. You will work collaboratively with the Evaluation Director equivalent from Corporate Development or the TA throughout the deal process. Transactions you will be involved in may include product licensing, divestment, asset or company acquisition or complex partner collaboration. You will lead multi-functional cross-SET area teams in progressing transactions. You will lead development of business cases and support their presentation to the most senior management in the company. You must have strong judgement and decision-making skills in order to take responsibility both for progressing and terminating transactions.

You will establish and independently lead international, senior level, diverse, multifunctional teams to prosecute transactions in all therapy areas, at all Development phases and on market deals in any geography. You will Interpret and synthesize data gathered from 3rd parties, desk sources and internal AZ knowledge. You will work with leadership to ensure appropriate prioritization and ranking of transactions across the business. You will identify transaction risks and opportunities and make clear recommendations to senior management to progress or to close. You will manage the relationship with the potential partner in the transaction phase in a timely and professional manner.

You will be responsible to ensure that AZ remains competitive in 3rd party deal process. You will construct and negotiate optimal deal structure in discussions with internal and external stakeholders. You will prepare and present deal propositions to relevant governance bodies. You will lead the deal negotiation and closure. You will ensure that appropriate records are maintained in ECHO and that decision support documentation is uploaded as appropriate. You will ensure effective handover to relevant Alliance- Integration Manager. You will ensure thorough deal learning reviews are undertaken and learnings are shared across the BD deal making community.

Requirements

Essential Requirements

  • BS Degree (Masters is desirable)
  • Broad knowledge of pharmaceutical business, process and activities
  • Good knowledge of disease areas, drug development activities and commercial processes
  • Extensive experience in leading multiple, large, international, multi-functional project teams of senior professionals.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to ascertain the relevant issues from large masses of information.
  • Strong interpersonal and team leadership skills, demonstrating flexibility and a proven ability to deal with complexity under time pressure.
  • Experience and effectiveness in the presentation of written and verbal business cases to the most senior AZ Management, up to and including SET.
  • Knowledge of alternative deal structures and legal principles applicable to a range of deal types
  • Numerate and having financial literacy
  • Proven negotiation skills and experience of working in an intense deal environment.
  • Gravitas and experience to create a positive relationship with third parties as an AZ Ambassador at Board and Executive Committee level.
  • Tenacity and resourcefulness. Calmness under sustained pressure of intense deal environment. Demonstrates structured and measured leadership, interactions and decision making during periods of high intensity in external or internal deliberations.
  • A flexible, team orientated attitude, willing to contribute own skills to deliver AZ priority projects
