Job Description

At Synthetic Genomics, Inc., we are dedicated to developing and commercializing genomic-driven solutions to address global challenges. We are currently seeking a Temporary Research Associate to join our Synthetic Genomics group in a fast-growing, dynamic and collaborative team in La Jolla, CA.

The RA will provide support to the photosynthesis teams working toward improved photosynthetic light use efficiency of algae for the production and commercialization of fuels and chemicals.


Required Skills
• In collaboration with group Scientists, execute experiments to identify targets of opportunity for improve photosynthetic efficiency in proprietary algae and cyanobacteria.
• Contribute to in-house expertise in the field of photosynthetic light and dark reactions.
• Carefully execute experiments to reliably generate high quality data according to specified protocols.
• Work closely with supervisors to improve understanding of laboratory techniques, achieving a high level of competency to execute experiments routinely
• Perform comprehensive literature reviews and summarize as required
• Record data, assist with analysis, and present results to supervisor and department
• Perform and communicate effectively within a group environment

Required Experience
• Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology, Phycology, Plant Biology, Biology, or related discipline relevant industrial experience preferred but not necessary.
• Experience with aseptic technique and microbial phototroph cultivation.
• Relevant laboratory experience, particularly with photosynthetic physiological measurements including CO2 uptake and O2 production, P-I curves, and advanced fluorometry is desirable.
• Some knowledge of photosynthetic light and dark reactions is required.
• Strong work ethic with the ability to work conscientiously in a team environment.
• Strong written & verbal communication skills including the ability to evaluate and convey results in small and large group settings.
