Job Description

Oncology is a key therapeutic area for AbbVie, with a portfolio consisting of three marketed products — Imbruvica, Venclexta, and Empliciti — and a pipeline containing multiple promising new molecules that are being studied in nearly 200 clinical trials in 19 different types of cancer. AbbVie is expanding its oncology hub on the West Coast, with three sites in the San Francisco Bay Area (Redwood City, South San Francisco, and Sunnyvale) focused on the discovery and development of novel oncology therapies. More than 1,000 AbbVie scientists, clinicians, and product developers with strong entrepreneurial roots work across these three sites. They combine their expertise in immuno-oncology, stem cells, and cell-signaling with their knowledge of bispecific antibodies, antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs), and covalent-inhibitor technologies to discover and develop novel cancer treatments. This position is based at Stemcentrx, AbbVie's South San Francisco, CA location.


In this role, you will be recognized as an expert in Linux-based high performance computing, containers, common pipeline programming platforms, and cloud computing. You will be responsible for high-level systems administration, research, planning, architecture, design and Level IV support of these areas. You will provide cross-discipline expertise and be charged with assessing the effect & fit of technologies aligning technical solutions with enterprise goals.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Responsible for compliance with applicable Corporate and Divisional Policies and procedures.
  • Defines, plans and designs innovative Linux-based high performance computing platforms that support containers, and common pipeline programming platforms that can be comprised of on-premise compute, container as a service, and cloud computing, to meet BioInformatics and scientific data analysis requirements. Successfully negotiates technical design and deployment strategy with clients at multiple locations.
  • Leads the effort that designs and defines the architecture standards in the aforementioned areas of technology. Leads the development, prepares recommendation and secures approval of stakeholders and enterprise architecture. Serves as the cross-platform technical subject matter expert and provides consulting support to IT and end-user organizations.
  • Produces and maintains timely, accurate engineering documentation to support implementation, operations support and quality/compliance requirements. Develops Standard Operating Procedure's. Presents proposed changes through standardized change management procedures.
  • Designs system tests, and performs capacity planning and data modeling. Leads technical projects that are focused on introduction of new high performance computing, programming, container or pipleline needs. Establishes criteria and performs technology evaluations, including lab analysis and proof of concept along with supporting analysis and documentation.
  • Frequently interacts with BioInformatics groups and data scientists to guide product development, engineering and product management of code generated and maintained by these groups.
  • Provides technical direction and mentors staff in area of expertise.
  • Responsible for straddling the gap between hardware and programmers. Integrates knowledge of technical standards with communication, leadership and business skills. Establishes technology-specific vision and strategy. Participates in the development of AbbVie Security policies as applicable to area of expertise.

Requirements

  • Required: Bachelor's Degree Computer Science, Information Systems, BioInformatics, other related field. Preferred: MS Computer Science, Computer Engineering, BioInformatics.
  • Demonstrated mastery of the concepts and theory related to high performance computer (SGI UV300 or equivalent, Virtual linux machines, cloud containers), job scheduling (Docker), Linux platform management (SuSE, Ubuntu, CentOS, RHEL), container as a service (Kubernetes), Linux systems integrations (Active Directory, SMB, NFS, file share access and permissioning), platform tuning, code tuning, and systems management (ssh, security, crontabs, etc.).
  • Understanding of optimizing code to hardware/operating system using the latest file systems, code libraries, operating system advances, and other leading optimization approaches.
  • Experience tuning hardware/operating system to a coding platform such as R/shiny, python, SQL, C/C++, and base level shells (bash / csh).
  • Demonstrates a strong customer-centric approach, an empathy for locational cultural differences, and excellent communications skills.
  • 5-10 years IT experience with support for cutting edge, high performance linux containerized pipeline processing.
