Main Duties and Responsibilities

The Supply Chain Program Manager (SCPM) role is a key leadership role within R&D Supply Chain. The role holder will manage one or more supply chains for late stage projects and / or a portfolio of early stage projects. He / she will lead cross-functional Supply Chain Teams and represent the R&D Supply Chain function on Pharmaceutical Development Project Teams throughout the life cycle of the project. The Supply Chain Program Manager (SCPM) works in collaboration with customer functions to influence and manage demand, and is responsible for all R&D Supply Chain project deliverables to the business through leadership of the Supply Chain Team.

  • Lead a Supply Chain Team (SCT) to generate options for how the supply requirements of a development project can be met, including sourcing (in or out), timing of investments, costs, identification and management of risks and application of good supply chain management practice.
  • Set up the supply chain selected / endorsed by the project team.
  • Represent the Supply Chain Function on the Pharmaceutical Development Project Team to contribute to and influence the development strategy for the project, ensuring that the needs, risks and opportunities of the supply chain are taken into account.
  • In collaboration with customers (Clinical, Global Medical Affairs, Global Safety Assessment, other PT&D functions), determine, influence and manage demand for drug substance, drug product and patient packs, including requirements for placebo, comparators and rescue / challenge medication.
  • Produce a supply strategy documenting the design, set-up and how the supply chain will operate for a programme of studies.
  • Ensure delivery of the end to end supply of materials to meet project needs
  • Monitor the performance of the supply chain and optimise for higher volume phases of the project, balancing speed, quality and cost with respect to the agreed level of risk.
  • Manage the budget for supply activities and materials for the project.
  • Maintain appropriate information for supply activities in the Portfolio Management System (OPAL)
  • Ensure ongoing supply through transition from development sources to commercial sources of manufacture.
  • Manage change in demand and supply, resolve issues, escalating when appropriate
  • Ensure timely delivery of information to meet internal and external regulatory and legal requirements.
  • Work with other SCPMs to resolve issues, share best practice and continually develop competence.
  • Promote supply chain practice in PT&D and interfacing functions.


Essential Requirements

  • Degree in supply chain related or drug development discipline or equivalent qualification or experience.
  • Extensive experience (5+ years) working in supply chains
  • Significant experience managing and influencing customer demands
  • In depth knowledge of R&D supply chain and drug development process
  • Experience of project management
  • Experience managing a budget for supply activities and materials.
  • Demonstrated technical skills and mindset in supply chain management including demand management, supply chain design / optimisation and delivery.
  • Track record of good project management
  • Risk identification and management
  • Good influencing, negotiating and problem-solving skills, including across functional, geographical and cultural boundaries.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
