Job Description

Xcell Biosciences is a San Francisco-based life science start-up company that has developed a proprietary primary cell culture platform for use in research, drug development, and precision and regenerative medicine applications. The technology delivers simple, standardized culture of primary cell types from a variety of patient tissues and blood, including expansion of tumor cells and immune cells. This novel platform enables direct disease insights ex vivo, with use in drug development applications ranging from novel cancer biomarker discovery to cell-based immunotherapy lead optimization. The company is focused on tools to improve primary cell expansion, transfection and control of cell state, and is generating revenue from the Avatar system launched in 2017.

As a member of our team, the candidate will be responsible to support the development and advancement of programs that leverage proprietary technology to enhance induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) generation, their maintenance, and their differentiation into functionally mature cells (e.g. neurons, cardiomyocytes).



-Design, perform, and analyze experiments to provide data towards improved methods for working with iPSCs and for demonstrating mature cells; from products and protocol development to release to customers

-Develop and conduct in-house experiments generating and using iPSCs with the potential to work with co-development partners and consult on customer experiments

-Opportunity to work closely with the field application scientists as well as sales and marketing team on introducing the company and product to new customers


-M.S./Ph.D. degree in molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, bioengineering, or biology related discipline

-Good laboratory skills in molecular biology with 2-4 years of lab experience in cell culture, DNA and RNA isolation, basic and immunofluorescence microscopy, sterile techniques

-Evidence of solid verbal and written communication skills, knowledge of computers, including excellent record keeping skills

-Previous experience working with and or culturing of stem cells/iPSCs (preferably human)

-Experience optimizing differentiation protocols is a plus

-Evidence of grant-writing is a plus

-Demonstrated ability to qualify cell maturity (electrophysiology or MEA a plus)

-Capacity to work in a fast-paced environment

-Highly motivated, independent self-starter – but a great team player too!

-Resiliency and flexibility around shifting work streams and timeframes

-Focused and meticulous with excellent attention to detail
