PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Advanced Biomedical Computing Center (ABCC) is a part of the Information Systems Program at the Frederick National Lab. The ABCC provides technology development, scientific consultation, collaboration and training, and high-performance computing support to the NCI and NIH scientists and staff.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Sr. NGS Bioinformatics Manager will manage and direct the Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) group that currently supports the PacBio, Illumina, Roche/454, SOLiD, and Ion Torrent platforms. The individual will also be tasked with strategic oversight of the NGS informatics operations including evaluation of new technologies and associated bioinformatics support needs. In addition, the successful candidate will lead efforts to consolidate, optimize and unify aspects of the workflow components and analysis capabilities, coordinate efforts between laboratory and informatics staff, liaison with investigators regarding results and changing needs. The successful candidate will be expected to establish strong cross-team efforts with other bioinformatics teams within the ABCC/ISP and FNL.

Requirements

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

- Possession of a Master’s degree from an accredited college/university in bioinformatics or a related field or six (6) years of experience in lieu of a degree. Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency.

- In addition to education requirements, the candidate must have eight (8) years related experience with increasing management responsibilities and a minimum of three (3) years in a leadership position.

- The candidate must possess extensive experience in genomics and NGS sequence analysis, construction of processing pipelines, evaluation of results and associated Quality Control metrics and directing a team engaged in several projects with many investigators in a core model.

- Expert knowledge in bioinformatics, computational analyses of sequence data, genetics/genomics and quality control/quality assurance analyses.

- Hands-on experience in processing and assembling large scale sequencing data, polymorphism discovery, and genetic analysis. Experience in using and developing sequence analysis and Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNP) discovery tools/pipelines, scientific programming skills and experience working in a team-oriented environment.

- Excellent communication skills are required.

- This position is subject to obtaining a Public Trust Clearance.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

- PhD preferred.

- Laboratory experience in bioinformatics or molecular biology.

- Experience in molecular biology and knowledge of laboratory operations, biochemistry, and other areas of relevant biomedical research.
