Job Duties:

Under the supervision of the Laboratory Director, the primary duties are to coordinate and supervise all activities in the Blood Bank section of the Clinical Laboratory. This includes all pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical processes. The Sr. Supervisor serves as a core member of the Transfusion Medicine management team to provide oversight for operations, provide excellent customer service, maintain a positive work environment, and achieve departmental goals.  Responsibilities include direct supervision of staff and management of the daily operational activities.  Provides 24/7 on call coverage.  Responsible to develop and maintain policies and procedures, oversee training and competency assessments, perform performance evaluations, liaison with clinical staff to evaluate, respond to, and resolve issues, initiate corrective action and educate clinical staff.  The Sr. Supervisor is responsible for the coordination of Blood Bank testing between WW, SMH and UCLA Clinics. Ensure compliance with AABB, FDA, CAP, JCAHO, and DHS regulatory requirements.  Perform liaison functions with UCLA multidisciplinary groups at Westwood, Santa Monica, and UCLA Clinics.  Initiate and maintain process improvement activities with multidisciplinary groups to ensure optimal delivery of service that meet quality, cost efficiencies and customer service goals of UCLA Heath System.

Job Qualifications:

The following are required: Current California Clinical Lab Scientist license, SBB preferred. Four years recent experience in Blood Bank testing. Must have knowledge of immunohematology testing, blood product preparation and administration, and how blood bank tests and blood products can support diagnosis and treatment of patients in order to interact with physicians, pharmacists and other healthcare personnel. Must have management skills such as planning, organizing, directing, and coordinating the work of others. The incumbent is required to have an academic background, practical experience, and teaching ability in blood bank, as well as leadership skills in planning, organizing, directing, and coordinating the work of others. The incumbent needs to anticipate and respond to customer service expectations of the Health System and the Clinical Laboratories. Must have current knowledge of AABB, FDA, CAP, JCAHO, California State, CLIA, CLSI and Cal OSHA guidelines and regulations for blood bank laboratories. Must be able to work cooperatively as a member of a team and maintain a positive humanistic attitude. Must be able to work independently and follow through on assignments with minimal supervision.
